The latest in Osteoporosis Risk Assessment and Treatment was discussed with Primary Care practitioners at the 8th Annual 2014 Spring CME (Continuing Medical Education) Conference March 31-April 4, 2014 in Palm Coast Florida.

2014-04-18
PALM COAST, FL, April 18, 2014 (Press-News.org) Continuing Education Company, a leader in family practitioner continuing medical education, presented Dr. Alan Stern's "Osteoporosis: of Mortar and Bricks" at their 8th Annual Spring CME Conference on March 31, 2014.

Dr. Stern's lecture reviewed several factors to use when it comes to doing a risk fracture assessment on a patient. These included age, BMI, family history, alcohol use or smoking, poor diet, medications, malabsorption and inflammatory arthritis. The continuing medical education lecture discussed the importance of Osteoporosis management including global assessment of the patient which requires addressing modifiable risk factors, often involving pharmacologic intervention and dietary supplementation, mandating a program of activity tailored to the patient and the need to monitor the patient and the plan to increase chance of success.

According to Dr. Stern, effective DXA monitoring requires strict attention to technique, follow up at the same DXA site with (ideally) the same technician and knowledge of a site's least significant change (and a report that applies this knowledge).

According to Barbara Lyons, VP of Continuing Education Company, "Dr. Stern's comprehensive coverage of Osteoporosis was a perfect summary of risk assessment, medications and treatment options for all the primary care providers present at the conference."

Alan Stern, MD, FACR, FFACP, of the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Richmond, Bon Secours Medical Group in Richmond VA received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He trained in Internal and Rheumatology at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University and completed fellowship training in Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition he was awarded fellowships from both the Arthritis Foundation and the Arthritis National Research Foundation. Dr Stern is a certified clinical densitometrist (bone density specialist).
