Wings Of Rescue Organizes Massive 100 Dog Rescue From Deadly San Bernardino City Shelter

The Controversial Shelter and City Officials Are Working With the Rescue Community To Help Improve Shelter Conditions and Save More Lives

2014-04-21
LOS ANGELES, CA, April 21, 2014 (Press-News.org) In an incredible effort to rescue dogs from the San Bernardino City Shelter (SBCS), a high-kill shelter in the city of San Bernardino, CA, Wings of Rescue, a non-profit organization that provides air transport for thousands of animals saved each year from high kill shelters in California, has committed to saving 100 dogs from the deadly animal shelter on Tuesday, April 22nd. The mass rescue will also include dogs in the Devore Animal Shelter, which is also located in San Bernardino County.

Wings of Rescue has partnered with Humane Societies in Santa Fe, NM; Coeur d'Alene, ID; and Southwest WA to assist in this endeavor. All participating Humane Societies are no-kill facilities that have committed to the housing, care and adoption of all dogs rescued from SBCS and Devore on Tuesday.

The San Bernardino City Shelter has been the recent focus of considerable debate due to conditions and treatment of animals. This epic rescue endeavor is an effort for the animal rescue community and the shelter to work together to save as many lives as possible and eventually improve conditions at SBCS and other local animal shelters.

"We know that the city of San Bernardino is in bankruptcy, and there are many problems the city is facing as a whole," stated Yehuda Netanel, Founder of Wings of Rescue. "However, that doesn't mean that the animals in the shelter don't deserve a second chance at life. We organized this effort to show that there is a better way! By working together with the SBCS staff, our goal and hope is that they will continue to work with us going forward, and we can ultimately save more lives!"

For Tuesday's rescue effort, multiple rescues and a volunteer veterinarian will be on location at SBCS to do a basic assessment of the dogs that are most in need. Those will include dogs that are very sick and/or injured. From there, the dogs will be sent to local kennels or fosters and receive the care they need before they are able to travel. When the dogs are healthy enough to travel, they will be sent to one of the partner Humane Societies for continued care, training, vetting and adoption. The first group flight will depart on Saturday, April 26th.

About Wings of Rescue
In Just 3.5 years, Wings of Rescue has flown 8,500 dogs and cats to safety! Wings of Rescue is the only all-volunteer organization to fly this number of pets to a second chance of a better life. The organization not only transports healthy dogs and cats, but pregnant moms/moms with newly born babies; dogs with recent surgeries or animals in need of major surgical procedures. A 3-4 hour flight can replace a 20-hour non-stop car ride in a small crate without "restroom" breaks. Some of these animals may not survive such a grueling ground transport.
