Visually Impaired Persons Explain How the Society Makes a Positive Difference in Their Lives

2011-06-10
ST. LOUIS, MO, June 10, 2011 (Press-News.org) A new video DVD by the St. Louis Society for the Blind & Visually Impaired reveals inspiring stories of how the Society and its staff help improve quality of life for people of all ages with its meaningful programs and services.

"In Their Own Words: Making a Difference" is the name of the video DVD featuring people who have been blinded or visually impaired by accidents or illness, and who lead productive, rewarding lives thanks to programs and services the non-profit Society provides to children, adults and senior citizens.

"Free copies of our inspirational new video are available to schools, churches, businesses and non-profit organizations that want to learn more about our many programs and services," said Society President David Ekin, ACSW, LCSW.

"These include our Drews Low Vision Clinic, Orientation and Mobility Services, Vision Rehabilitation, In-Home Services and many innovative programs to help people conquer the emotional adjustment of dealing with blindness or visual impairment, including adaptive technology/computer instruction and daily living skills for children and adults," Ekin said.

"In Their Own Words: Making a Difference" features local persons blinded in a motorcycle accident, a workplace incident, by a brain aneurism and by a stroke, and also senior citizens suffering from macular degeneration due to advancing age. Each discusses how they discovered positive new ways of living because of their involvement with the Society's dedicated, caring staff.

The video also features commentary by some of the Society's licensed and certified staff, members of the organization's Board of Directors and, in addition, St. Louis Cardinals President William O. DeWitt III, who is Honorary Chair of the Society's 100th Anniversary activities in 2011.

To request a free copy of "In Their Own Words: Making a Difference," contact the Society by calling 314.968.9000, or visit the website http://www.SLSBVI.org. The seven-minute video was produced by Ekin and Vice Chair of the Board Sheila Sweeney and Board Member Sabra Engelbrecht with creative assistance by Jeff Dunlap of Powerline Public Relations and the V9 Studios production team at KETC-TV Channel 9 in St. Louis.

Founded in 1911, the Society is a registered 501 C (3) not-for-profit organization. The Society enhances independence, empowers individuals and enriches the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired and their families. It provides older adults who are newly visually impaired or blind due to age-related eye conditions with home-based services, specialized services and community activities. It also renders services to school-age students in Illinois and Missouri. It is the only agency of its kind serving greater St. Louis, and the second oldest of its kind west of the Mississippi River.
