As winter comes to a close and the weather improves, many Kansas City residents will start traveling by motorcycle to take advantage of the warmth. With the increase in motorcycle traffic, however, comes a rise in the risk of serious motorcycle accidents.
While the number of fatalities caused by most types of motor vehicle accidents has decreased in recent years, the number of motorcycle fatalities has been on the rise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, from 1999 to 2008, the number of people killed in motorcycle accidents in the U.S. more than doubled.
In total, over 34,000 motorcycle riders died in collisions with other motor vehicles from 2001 to 2008. In addition, over one million motorcyclists required emergency room treatment for personal injuries suffered in motorcycle crashes during that period.
These startling statistics should not deter motorcyclists from an enjoyable pastime, but it is wise for motorcycle riders to review important safety tips before taking to the streets this spring.
Take steps to protect yourself from a serious motorcycle crash
One of the most important steps a motorcyclist can take to protect his or her wellbeing is to wear a helmet while on the road. The helmet should be approved by the Department of Transportation, and it is critical that it fits the user properly.
In addition, motorcyclists should always ensure they are alert and paying attention to the road conditions while riding. Motorcyclists ought to avoid distractions and always refrain from riding if they have consumed alcohol or other substances that could impair their ability to ride safely.
Motorcyclists should also ensure they are wearing the appropriate attire when they get on the road. Wearing a fabric, such as leather, that can provide some protection if a crash occurs is a wise choice. Motorcyclists traveling at night should also consider wearing clothes with reflective panels, to ensure other motorists can spot them easily.
Both motorcyclists and other motor vehicle drivers should always leave a safe distance between the bike and other cars, as well. It is particularly common for other drivers to underestimate the amount of space necessary for a motorcyclist to make a safe stop.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident, you may be entitled to recover damages to cover the harm caused in the collision. In such situations, it would be prudent to seek the advice of a skilled personal injury attorney who can help ensure your rights are protected.
