RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, January 04, 2011 (Press-News.org) Drivers in the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, now have even more incentive to abide by the state's car insurance mandate after local police began a new campaign this past weekend that targets the uninsured motorist problem.
Over New Year's weekend, a unit of the city's police department set up a number of checkpoints across the city where drivers were asked to show proof of insurance. If a motorist stopped at the checkpoint could not provide proof of coverage, the police were authorized to tow the vehicle to an impound yard.
For those who don't have coverage, getting caught while driving uninsured will likely end up costing much more than it would have been to simply purchase a policy in the first place. In light of this, Texas motorists may want to find and purchase a low down payment auto insurance policy rather than run the risk of large fines and potentially huge costs of causing a serious accident.
If a Texas driver is found to be driving without financial protection, the punishments are relatively severe. Motorists convicted of driving without coverage can get court fines ranging from $175 to $1,000, depending on whether there were previous convictions. In addition to these one-time court fines, the Texas Department of Public Safety leverages an annual surcharge of $250 for three years in order for a convicted driver to maintain his or her driver's license.

And drivers who have their cars towed and impounded by the Corpus Christi Police Department are also subject to a $133 impound fee, with additional storage charges of $21.65 per day. Those who have had their cars towed will also need to show proof of financial responsibility in order to reclaim their vehicles.
Taking all of these costs into consideration, a person who gets stopped at the checkpoint and does not have insurance could wind up paying $1,256 just in fines and fees for a first-time offense.

"Private" Posts To Social Media Discoverable in Lawsuits?
2011-01-04
Every day millions of people log on to Facebook and MySpace to post pictures of adventures and everyday events, update friends on life's happenings, and express thoughts and feelings. While using these new online social media, most assume that since they selected "private" status for their accounts, and because they only share information and pictures with their friends and family, that those who are not meant to see this information won't. But this thinking may be flawed.
Consider the logistics of keeping private the sheer volume of information flowing from social-media ...

According to family law specialist Stacy Phillips, there are ways to keep children from experiencing additional grief during the divorce process. She offers the following ...
CDC Says Reducing Motor Vehicle Injuries Is a "Winnable Battle"
2011-01-04
When most people hear Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health concerns used in the same sentence, they often think of preventable illnesses and communicable diseases. They do not think about motor vehicle accidents or injuries sustained in car crashes. But automobile collisions are a public health problem.
The CDC has identified six public health concerns as "winnable battles" -- one of those six targeted areas includes injuries from motor vehicle accidents. This designation means there will be increased attention and resources focused on preventing ...
Teen Driving Safety Promoted in Arizona Through the Driving Skills for Life Program
2011-01-04
With almost 3,000 teenagers killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2009 and another 350,000 injured, it is no surprise that car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens aged 15-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Even though drivers in this age group represent only 4 percent of the licensed drivers in Arizona, they account for 10 percent of motor vehicle accidents.
In an effort to reduce these statistics and promote safe driving, on-hands safety training was provided via the "Driving Skills for Life" program held early November in Chandler.

Is there a Doctor in the Team? The Use of Primary Care Teams
2011-01-04
A recent article from U.S. News discussed the development of primary care teams, rather than individual doctors, for treating patients.
According to the story, "team" is a relatively new concept in family medicine. The writer tells of a colleague who told him, only half in jest, "My definition of good teamwork is that when I tell my office nurse to do something, he or she does it."
The concept is to examine the many elements of a visit to a doctor and change who does some of the information gathering and even some of the selection of treatments. Some medical practices ...
Allegheny County Generates Waiting List for Monitoring Anklets
2011-01-04
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that waiting lists for electronic monitoring devices in Allegheny County have increased to over 900 persons. The electronic devices in the form of a black plastic anklet allow probation officers to monitor the whereabouts of the persons convicted of minor criminal offenses.
The County owns 1,200 of the devices, and tries to turn around a unit the same day it is returned, but the waiting list is still at 925. This is due to the courts instituting a program this year that expedited minor criminal cases in the system.
The process has ...
