(Press-News.org) Registrations are open to apply for the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Quantum Materials, to be held on July 6-16, 2024, at the University of São Paulo’s Physics Institute in São Paulo City, Brazil. The School expects to select and fully support 100 graduate students and young researchers (50 from Brazil and 50 from abroad) to take part in short courses and talks focusing on fundamental, theoretical, and experimental aspects of quantum materials – a fertile ground for the development of cutting-edge research that deals with phenomena such as superconductivity, different types of electronic topology, complex magnetic configurations, among others.
The School will also include two poster sessions where participants will have the opportunity to present their works.
The School’s ten-day program will cover topics like experimental techniques for the growth of quantum materials, advanced methods for material characterization, density functional theory, topological insulators, and heavy fermion systems.
The discussions will be enriched by a team of highly qualified researchers and leaders in the area. Some of the most prestigious names in the field are confirmed as speakers in the School, including:
- Adrian Feiguin from Northeastern University (USA), who will be expanding on “DMRG algorithms and Tensor Networks”;
- Eduardo Silva Neto from Yale University (USA), who will be speaking of “STM, RIXS and ARPES techniques for investigating emergent quantum states of matter”;
- John Perdew from Tulane University (USA), who will be giving the lecture “From the fundamentals of Density Functional Theory for its use in complex quantum materials”;
- Juan Carrasquilla and Roger Melko, respectively from the Perimeter Institute and the University of Waterloo, both in Canada, teaming up for the presentation “Machine Learning for Many-Body Physics”;
- M. Zahid Hasan from Princeton University (USA), who will be expanding on “Topological Quantum Matter”;
- Paul Canfield from AMES Lab (USA), who will be lecturing on “New materials growth, New materials growth and discovery, New materials characterization”;
- Silke Paschen from Vienna University of Technology (Austria) will give a lecture, “Heavy fermion systems: From quantum criticality to electronic topology.”
Reporters are invited to register for the scientific sessions and short courses, which will present state-of-the-art science and new research results.
The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is supporting the event through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS http://espca.fapesp.br/home). Applications must be submitted by February 26, 2024.

In December 2022, NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) mission observed the dramatic and unexpected “disappearance” of a stream of charged particles constantly emanating off the Sun, known as the solar wind. This was caused by a special type of solar event that was so powerful, it created a void in its wake as it traveled through the solar system.
