(Press-News.org) The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) today welcomed the publication of positive results of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).
The NLST study, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that lung cancer deaths fell by 20% and all-cause mortality fell by 7% when heavy smokers were screened regularly using low-dose spiral computed tomography (CT) compared with standard chest x-ray. The NLST study followed more than 53,000 current and former smokers ages 55-74.
"Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the world and there has been no effective means of early detection, which is critical to improving outcome because surgery can cure early-stage disease but there are no curative therapies for advanced disease," said IASLC Executive Director Dr. Paul A. Bunn, Jr., M.D. Bunn holds the James Dudley Chair in Cancer Research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology.
Experts from around the world will gather in Amsterdam on July 2-3 for an invitation-only Lung Cancer CT Screening Workshop prior to the start of the 14th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC). IASLC will host the WCLC in Amsterdam from July 3-7.
Topics to be discussed at the workshop include recommendations for CT screening implementation and the appropriate workup for screen-detected lung cancers.
A press briefing on CT screening, summarizing the conclusions of the workshop, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Central European Time (Amsterdam) on Monday, July 4. Press materials and an audio webcast of the press briefing will be available on the IASLC website: http://iaslc.org/press-room/wclc-press-releases/
"The publication of the NLST trial is a major turning point in lung cancer, which demonstrates the enormous potential of CT screening as an early detection tool, which, in combination with smoking cessation programs, is likely to have a major impact on lung cancer," said Professor John K. Field, MA, Ph.D., BDS FRCPath, who chairs IASLC's CT Screening Task Force. Field is director of research at the
Roy Castle Lung Cancer Research Programme, The University of Liverpool Cancer Research Centre
Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine, Institute of Translational Medicine at The University of Liverpool.
Although the NLST results are encouraging, other important trials are under way that will provide critical additional information not only on mortality advantage and cost effectiveness, but also on the clinical management outcomes of lung cancer screening. Different nations will require varying levels of evidence to support the decision to provide national lung cancer screening services.
"It is important to realize that enthusiasm for routine use of these scans should be limited to the population studied -- 30 pack years of smoking and age 55-74 -- and that many issues remain unresolved," Dr. Bunn said. "Among these are the cost-effectiveness of the procedure and the best way to follow small nodules that may or may not be cancer."

About IASLC:
The Denver-based International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) is the only global organization dedicated to the study of lung cancer. Founded in 1972, the association's membership includes more than 3,000 lung cancer specialists in 80 countries. It hosts the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) every two years; the 14th WCLC will take place in Amsterdam July 3-7.
IASLC members promote the study of etiology, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and all other aspects of lung cancer and thoracic malignancies. IASLC disseminates information about lung cancer to scientists, members of the medical community and the public, and uses all available means to eliminate lung cancer as a health threat for the individual patients and throughout the world. Membership is open to any physician, health professional or scientist interested in lung cancer.
IASLC publishes the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, a valuable resource for medical specialists and scientists who focus on the detection, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. To learn more about IASLC please visit http://iaslc.org/

CHICAGO— The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) is the first scientific study that provides clear evidence that CT screening significantly reduces the death rate due to lung cancer. NLST data shows 20 percent fewer lung cancer deaths among trial participants who had the CT scan compared with the chest x-ray. Until now, no screening test for lung cancer has proven effective in detecting tumors at an early, more treatable stage.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital is the only NLST site in Chicago. During the study period, more than 400 individuals enrolled in the trial locally. ...

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Zeroing in on the early cell mutations that enable a cancer to grow is one of the best ways to find a personalized therapy to stop it. Scientists were able to use a statistical approach for the first time to map out the order in which these abnormalities form to analyze the pattern of DNA changes in advanced skin and ovarian tumors.
The study's findings, which are published in the July edition of Cancer Discovery, are the result of a collaboration of scientists at the Oregon Health & Science University Knight Cancer Institute; the Lawrence Berkeley National ...

In order to realize the full potential of advanced biofuels that are derived from non-food sources of lignocellulosic biomass—e.g., agricultural, forestry, and municipal waste, and crops such as poplar, switchgrass and miscanthus—new technologies that can efficiently and cost-effectively break down this biomass into simple sugars are required. Existing biomass pretreatment technologies are typically derived from the pulp and paper industry and rely on dilute acids and bases to break down the biomass. The treated biomass product is then exposed to biological catalysts, ...
National Trust has announced that a newly restored semi-tropical plant house, a bathing pool and a summerhouse mural are just some of the results of 10 years of hard work and GBP3.5 million investment at Hidcote Manor garden in Gloucestershire.
The National Trust has now officially completed a major phase of reinstating many of the key historic structures in this world-famous garden thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, who matched every pound raised by the Trust up to GBP1.6 million.

Northwestern University researchers have provided new biological evidence suggesting that the brain works differently when memorizing the face of a person from one's own race than when memorizing a face from another race.
Their study -- which used EEG recordings to measure brain activity -- sheds light on a well-documented phenomenon known as the "other-race effect." One of the most replicated psychology findings, the other-race effect finds that people are less likely to remember a face from a racial group different from their own.
"Scientists have put forward numerous ...
CORVALLIS, Ore. – As homes and cities expand closer to forests and wildlands across the American West, increasing wildfire threats have created an unlikely new phenomena – confidence in government.
Recent studies show that people in neighborhoods adjacent to public forest lands can and do trust natural resource managers to a surprising degree, in part because the risks they face are so severe.
Thousands of acres burn every year, threatening homes, lives and property, and in many groups and areas, the phrase "I'm from the government – trust me" is no longer being used ...
