Taking time to carefully follow all postoperative directions will help guard against potential complications and ensure your cataract surgery is successful.

Postoperative Considerations

Following your cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will provide you with a complete list of things you will need to do to help guarantee a swift and complication-free recovery. This list will include things such as:

- Use all prescribed eye drops - eye drops are prescribed following cataract surgery to minimize inflammation, prevent infection, and control intraocular pressure
- Keep the area around your eye clean - avoid wearing makeup, touching, or rubbing the area around your eyes to prevent bacterial infection. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before touching the area around your eyes as well
- Wear your protective eye shield - you will wear an eye shield home from your cataract surgery. You should continue to wear it while you sleep for the first few weeks to avoid accidently bumping or scratching your eye
- Wear sunglasses - your eyes will be more sensitive to glare immediately following your surgery. Be sure to choose sunglasses with 100 percent UVA/UVB protection
- Avoid heavy lifting - lifting heavy objects can increase intraocular pressure

These steps can greatly increase your chances of a successful recovery. Your eye surgeon will provide you with specific instructions following your procedure.

Recovery from Cataract Surgery

If you follow all of your eye surgeon's advice, you can expect full recovery from cataract surgery to take up to 6 weeks. However, the mild discomfort that can immediately follow cataract surgery generally subsides within 1 to 2 days.

You may need to take a few days to recover before you resume work and moderate exercise. You may be able to engage in most activities within 1 week, but this is best left to your eye surgeon. During your postoperative exams, your eye surgeon will let you know if you are clear to resume all of your normal activities.

Following your recovery from cataract surgery, you should have much clearer vision. It may still be necessary to wear glasses or contact lenses, but many people enjoy the dual benefit of a crystal clear lens and greatly improved vision. Your eye surgeon will be able to give you a better idea of what vision changes you can expect following your procedure.
