SEATTLE, WA, October 02, 2010 (Press-News.org) One of the leading causes of blindness for people 55 years and older is a condition called macular degeneration. Nearly ten million people in the U.S. are affected by it. This is more than those blinded by glaucoma and cataracts combined. Macular degeneration is gradual and painless that many may not realize they have unless they have been screened by an experienced ophthalmologist.
Causes of Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is caused by the cells in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) wearing out. The retina has a layer of cells behind it called the macula. The cells of the macula are made up of rods and cones, and are in turn made up of two segments. The inner segment produces proteins that respond to light, while the outer segment stores and uses the proteins. When the outer segment wears out, they are removed by RPE cells. The inner segment then replaces the degraded outer segment cells. When the RPE cells begin to degrade and cannot remove waste anymore, the result is yellow, fat-like deposits that form below the rods and cones.
Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
Symptoms include:
- Fuzzy or distorted vision
- Areas of shadow in central vision
- Blurred printed words
- Difficulty recognizing faces
- Difficulty adapting to seeing in levels of low light
- Need for very bright light for near distance vision activities
- Difficulty recognizing faces
Treatment of Macular Degeneration
No treatment can undo the damage done by AMD, but there are certain things you can do to slowdown the progress of the disease. Early stage AMD may be slowed by a high dose regimen of vitamin supplements. These are:
- 500 mg of vitamin C
- 400 IU of vitamin E
- 80 mg of zinc oxide
- 15 mg of beta carotene
- 2 mg of copper
Advanced stage AMD may be slowed by taking the drugs Lucentis, Macugen, or Visudyne. Speak to your ophthalmologist about which regimen may benefit you the most.

2010-10-02
If you had braces when you were younger, or if you remember your friends having braces, you may be letting your smile suffer from tooth misalignments in order to avoid the stigma of having "metal mouth." The Metal Myth

CAD/CAM Dentistry

If you are an engineer you are probably familiar with the term CAD/CAM. But most of us are not only unfamiliar with the term, but unaware of how CAD/CAM technology is changing the face of dentistry and helping us all smile a little sooner.
CAD/CAM stands for Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing and has been used extensively in many manufacturing and engineering fields. A little over two decades ago, at the University of Zurich, the technology was used to create what is now called the CEREC, a method which creates porcelain dental restorations in a matter ...

Underwater Homeowner? How to Keep From Drowning
2010-10-02
Property ownership climbed to 69 percent in 2004. However, the availability of subprime mortgages in years prior to that, combined with the inflated prices of houses in the United States, paved the way for the current national housing crisis.
RealtyTrac says that foreclosure filings were reported on 937,840 properties in the third quarter of 2009. This was nearly a 23 percent increase from the same quarter in 2008. Basically one in every 136 United States housing units received a foreclosure filing during the quarter. Arizona was among the top ten states with the highest ...
Still No Anti-Texting Legislation in West Virginia
2010-10-02
As another legislative session comes to an end, West Virginia still has not made texting behind the wheel illegal. While there is a general distracted driving law that encompasses all behaviors behind the wheel that pull the driver's attention away from the road, some lawmakers and safety advocates say that it is not enough. The state does ban novice drivers -- those with a learner's permit or intermediate license -- from using cell phones and/or texting while operating a vehicle.
Several other states have at least made texting a secondary offense, meaning that law enforcement ...
