How Does BOTOX Cosmetic Work?

The science behind BOTOX Cosmetic is fascinating.

2012-08-09
HOUSTON, TX, August 09, 2012 (Press-News.org) The science behind BOTOX Cosmetic is fascinating. As one of seven serological types of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, BOTOX Cosmetic works by temporarily inhibiting nerve signals that cause muscle tension in what is medically known as selective muscle denervation.

Selective Muscle Denervation

The point where your facial muscles and nerves meet is called the neuromuscular junction. When the signal to contract is received by on the nerve side of this junction, it releases a chemical called acetylcholine, which binds to the muscle side causing the chemical reaction resulting in contraction. Contracting muscles impact the overlying skin, making them appear creased and wrinkled.

BOTOX Cosmetic interrupts this signal on the muscle side of your neuromuscular junction. When acetylcholine is released, it has nothing to bind to and therefore cannot cause the muscle to contract. This temporary muscle paralysis effectively eliminates the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles without limiting facial movement or expression.

Dangers of Selective Muscle Denervation

BOTOX Cosmetic essentially works by paralyzing the muscles in your face. While largely considered a safe procedure, performed incorrectly, it can result in irreversible damage. BOTOX Cosmetic is available at locations as diverse as hair salons and booths at the mall, but only an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon should ever be trusted to give you injections.

Your safety and satisfaction depend on customizing your BOTOX Cosmetic treatment. To do this, considerations such as your age, skin type, and extent of wrinkling will need to be made. Visiting a location that offers a one-size-fits-all solution is never a good idea. A plastic surgeon will be able to assess you individual factors, discuss all of your options, and be able to advise you if BOTOX Cosmetic is right for you.

To learn if you are a good candidate for BOTOX Cosmetic in the areas of Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, or The Woodlands, Texas, please visit the website of the Belage Center for Facial Plastic Surgery at www.houstonfacialsurgeon.com to speak with board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Haresh Yalamanchili today.
