Motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common causes of fatalities across the country. Unfortunately, statistics recently released by the National Traffic Safety Administration indicate the number of people killed in many types of traffic accidents -- and specifically large truck crashes -- is on the rise.

According to the NHTSA, more people died in truck accidents in 2011 than the year prior. In 2011, 3,757 people were killed in truck accidents, up from 3,686 the year before -- accounting for an almost 2 percent increase.

In addition, the NHTSA found that number of people inside large trucks who died in a collision increased by 20 percent in 2011. In total, 635 people who were occupants of large trucks died when they were involved in a collision in 2011.

There was one bright note in the NHTSA research -- the number of people in other vehicles who were killed in collisions with large trucks fell in 2011. In 2010, 2,797 people in other vehicles involved in truck accidents were killed -- and in 2011 that number fell to 2,695.

In total, 32,367 people were killed in traffic accidents across the country in 2011, an almost 2 percent decrease from the year prior.

Hold negligent truck drivers accountable for motor vehicle accidents

Due to the disproportionate size of commercial motor vehicles compared to cars and even SUVs, it is common for those involved in truck accidents to sustain serious personal injuries or, in the worst cases, fatal injuries. In such situations, the medical expenses and other losses suffered by the injured party and his or her family can be overwhelming.

When someone is injured in a truck accident, the responsible party should be held accountable for those losses. In many cases, the injured party can recover damages to help alleviate the cost of the harm caused. For instance, damages often awarded following truck accidents include those for current and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and lost wages.

Family members can also recover damages when a loved one is lost in a truck accident. Typically, the amount of damages awarded will depend on a variety of factors, including the loved one's future earning capacity, age and life expectancy.

If you or a loved one has been injured or if you have lost a loved one in a truck accident, take steps to ensure the responsible party is held accountable for the collision. Consulting with a skilled personal injury attorney will ensure your rights are protected and just compensation is received.
