In fact, there are substantial differences between general, cosmetic, and neuromuscular dentistry, and knowing these differences can help you choose a dentist who is trained to provide you with the exact services you require.

General Dentistry
General dentistry focuses on the prevention, detection, and treatment of common oral health problems. Biannual visits to your dentist for teeth cleanings and examinations are part of general dentistry. So too are things such as root canals, dental fillings, and common tooth extractions. General dentistry requires a dental degree and proper licensing from a state dental board.

Cosmetic Dentistry

There is some crossover with general and cosmetic dentistry including things like dental crowns and tooth colored fillings, but by and large, cosmetic dentistry is its own branch. Neuromuscular Dentistry
Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the alignment and function of your temporomandibular joint. This joint is responsible for all of the movement of your jaw and, when misaligned, can result in serious discomfort along with a host of other problems.

The detection and treatment of TMJ is the primary purpose of neuromuscular dentistry and, to become a neuromuscular dentist, postgraduate training is required. Many neuromuscular dentists attend postgraduate training at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, but there are other schools that also offer this type of training.
