COOPER CITY, FL, May 03, 2013 (Press-News.org) The three to six-month age mark is a time when your once-happy and smiley little one becomes cranky and prone to tantrums. Don't lose heart--your baby is likely teething, a process that can make your baby feel fussy and refuse to eat. When teeth begin to emerge from your baby's gums, you can expect your baby will have some pain and behave accordingly.

Dr. May Yazij-Corey, D.M.D., a Cooper City, FL dentist at Miracle Dental Center sees babies each week who are undergoing the teething process, and she shares her tips for helping struggling parents.

"Not all babies experience pain or discomfort associated with teething, and it can be difficult to distinguish between an ill baby and a teething baby," says Dr. Yazij-Corey, a Pembroke Pines dentist.

While teething babies can experience symptoms, such as vomiting, a low-grade fever and breaking out in a rash as a result of teething, Dr. Yazij-Corey, Pembroke Pines, FL dentist says if your baby's temperature exceeds 101 degrees Fahrenheit, teething likely is not to blame. Diarrhea is also a symptom that should not occur during teething.

Dr. Yazij-Corey, Pembroke Pines dentist, recommends taking pain-relieving measures such as giving your baby a gentle gum massage by using a moist washcloth or gauze pad wrapped around your clean finger, gently rubbing your child's gums. A teething ring can help you achieve a similar effect. The rings are made from rubber your baby can chew on to relieve discomfort. However, Dr. Yazij-Corey, general dentist Pembroke Pine, FL, suggests using teething rings filled with liquid with care because they are prone to easy breakage. You can chill a teething ring in the refrigerator -- but not the freezer -- to achieve a cooling effect.

Drooling due to teething can lead to irritation, redness and rash around your child's mouth. Gently patting the area dry with a soft cloth or towel can help. Rubbing the area creates friction, which can lead to a rash. Petroleum jelly applied around your child's mouth and chin creates a protective barrier to keep saliva from irritating your child's skin.

Some home remedies reported to help your baby's teething pain can be harmful, Dr. Yazij-Corey says. This includes the topical application of alcohol or clove oil applied to your baby's gums.

"While it can be tempting to try alternative remedies, solutions for teething are often tried-and-true," says Dr. Yazij-Corey, Pembroke Pines general dentist. "Soothing your baby with these techniques can help your baby find relief until his or her teeth fully come in."
