Zafesoft Announces Support for DICOM images
2010-12-11
SAN JOSE, CA, December 11, 2010 (Press-News.org) Zafesoft today announced it has added support for DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) bitmap image types.

The Zafesoft solution now supports these files to secure them, and ensure that only authorized users can access, edit and work with these medical images, often containing PHI (Personal Health Information), the solution secures and tracks the usage of these image types.

"Zafesoft directly addresses the fundamental security problem of a global, networked world - data needs to and will move around the world to a shifting network of employees, providers and partners. Zafesoft provides a straightforward, clear solution to limiting and monitoring data movement," said Mike Mucha, Chief Security Information Officer at California-based Stanford Hospitals and Clinics.

The healthcare industry, which faces fines up to $1.5 million per incidence of PHI loss, today utilizes a mix of HIPAA training and network monitoring to secure their patients PHI. These approaches rely heavily on trusting internal people and their following prescribed processes, with no security once the data is outside the network.

The Zafesoft approach provides a technology that drastically reduces the overall organizational risk with its persistent digital security technology that functions inside and outside the firewall, online and offline with full edit and view functionality. The extension of security to data outside the firewall is a major innovation in the space of data security.

With the DICOM file suppoty, Zafesoft now offers the same level of security for image data types, that it already offers for document data types (such as Word, Excel PDF etc.).

When a patient visits a medical lab for a medical imaging procedure, they or their physicians are generally provided these images in the DICOM format, along with a reader/editor. The Zafesoft solution 'zafes' (encrypts and track enables) these images so only authorized users can work with them. In the event of a loss (accidental or malicious) the data remains fully secure, and any party that gets the data is unable to view or work with it. In the event of a known loss the permissions can be revoked remotely for definitive closure.

In the event an insider decides to leak any sensitive PHI (in the style of Wiki leaks) the zafed documents and information continue to be secure, and the perpetrators are immediately track-able. The audit trails provide assurance of security and maintain HIPAA or HITECH compliance.

"Adding DICOM support is just the start for Zafesoft to support other images types. The core technology is designed to secure any form of unstructured data," said Sandeep Tiwari, CEO of Zafesoft. "This architecture along with its ease of use, where users do not need any new training to work with zafed files, makes the solution an easy choice for enterprises, additionally it lowers their total cost of enterprise level security, where the single solution secures the data inside and outside the organization, and the audit trail it generates, does not need monitoring (archived for compliance or reports when needed)."
