Marasco Bridging Chemistry & AI-Empowered Imaging For Secure & Trustworthy Human Identity Verification 

Emanuela Marasco, Assistant Professor, Center for Secure Information Systems, received funding for the project: "EAGER: SaTC: Sweaty Digits: Bridging Chemistry and AI-Empowered Imaging for Secure and Trustworthy Human Identity Verification." 

Marasco seeks to characterize a person's extrinsic and intrinsic features for a more accurate representation of their identity by exploiting selected compounds detectable in human sweat. 

Sweat can provide a meticulous perspective on identity when scientists analyze its chemical properties.  

To use sweat in biometric technology, though, one must first understand four aspects: i) how many metabolites are in a sample and how much sweat is required to detect them, ii) how they vary, iii) the optimal region(s) in a fingertip to extract the metabolites of interest, and iv) whether the deposited sample and the capture process are repeatable.  

In this research, Marasco will investigate these four aspects using hyperspectral imaging (HSI).  

Marasco received $200,000 from the National Science Foundation for this project. Funding began in July 2023 and will end in late June 2025.
