BOISE, ID, January 21, 2011 (Press-News.org) For the first time ever, Pets Best Insurance is holding the "My Vet's the Best" contest which begins this month and ends December 31, 2011 to help with the costs of veterinary treatment for stray animals or animals whose owners cannot afford to pay for veterinary care.
To enter the contest, pet owners must email a story, picture and/or video to petsbestpromos@gmail.com telling the company why their pet's veterinarian is the best. Entries should include the pet's name, the pet owner's full name and address and the name and address of the veterinarian nominated. Entrants are also encouraged to post their stories, pictures and videos directly to the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page, at http://www.facebook.com/PetsBestInsurance.
Every three months a winning story will be selected. The pet owner who submitted the winning story will receive a $100 gift card* and the winning veterinarian will receive $500 to be used towards the treatment of animals in need.
The contest will recognize a total of four pet owners and their veterinarians during 2011. Winning stories will be featured on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page.
As the pet-owner bond increases and more pet owners consider their pets to be a part of the family, the demand for high-quality veterinary care has increased. With this high quality care and the advancement in veterinary medicine and technology, the cost of veterinary care is rising. So often, when a pet becomes unexpectedly ill or injured pet owners may have to make difficult decisions about treatment, that are often based on their financial situation instead of what may be best for their pet.
Dr. Jack Stephens, President and Founder of Pets Best Insurance, says this contest will allow veterinarians to continue to provide care to animals in need.
"We want to recognize and reward the passion, innovation and talents of veterinarians everywhere who make it their life's purpose to provide high quality care to their patients," Stephens said. "This contest will allow them to do so even if their client can't afford to pay, or if they want to treat a stray that shows up on the hospital doorstep."
The "My Vet's the Best" contest will help veterinarians treat and tend to those animals that would have otherwise had to forego care, or might instead be euthanized because of cost of care.
The "My Vet's the Best" contest is open to all pet owners in the US and entrants do not need to be Pets Best Insurance policy holders.

*The $100 gift cards awarded to pet owners with winning stories cannot be used for Pets Best Insurance services.

More asteroids could have made life's ingredients
2011-01-20
A wider range of asteroids were capable of creating the kind of amino acids used by life on Earth, according to new NASA research.
Amino acids are used to build proteins, which are used by life to make structures like hair and nails, and to speed up or regulate chemical reactions. Amino acids come in two varieties that are mirror images of each other, like your hands. Life on Earth uses the left-handed kind exclusively. Since life based on right-handed amino acids would presumably work fine, scientists are trying to find out why Earth-based life favored left-handed amino ...

Researchers at Northwestern University have created a robotic fish that can move from swimming forward and backward to swimming vertically almost instantaneously by using a sophisticated, ribbon-like fin.
The robot -- created after observing and creating computer simulations of the black ghost knifefish -- could pave the way for nimble robots that could perform underwater recovery operations or long-term monitoring of coral reefs.
Led by Malcolm MacIver, associate professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and ...
