NEW YORK, NY, August 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) Segun un informe publicado recientemente en la revista Lancet Infectious Diseases, investigadores britanicos han descubierto una nueva bacteria resistente a medicamentos. Estas bacterias han mutado y ahora presentan un nuevo gen--NDM-1--que las convierte en practicamente inmunes por ahora. Esa modificacion genetica altera la composicion organica de las celulas de las bacterias, y les proporciona la capacidad de resistir a los ataques de la mayoria de antibioticos que hay en el mercado actualmente. Al parecer, el NDM-1 afecta a una gran variedad de bacterias, incluida la E. coli, causante de la mayoria de infecciones de los conductos urinarios y de las infecciones transmitidas por los alimentos.
Cientificos londinenses han identificado 37 casos de bacterias geneticamente modificadas en Gran Bretana, y todas ellas se encontraron en personas que se habian desplazado poco tiempo antes a la India o a Pakistan para someterse a intervenciones quirurgicas. Sin embargo, estas bacterias se han encontrado en paises de todo el mundo, como Australia, Canada, los Paises Bajos, Estados Unidos y Suecia.
A medida que el numero de personas que practican el denominado "turismo de salud" en la India o en Pakistan para someterse a operaciones de estetica u optativas mas baratas, el riesgo de transmision de enfermedades aumenta, asi como el riesgo de brotes pandemicos, puesto que las bacterias se desplazan a hospitales de America, Europa y el resto del mundo.
QUE PODEMOS HACER PARA LUCHAR CONTRA EL BROTE?
Si bien las bacterias afectadas por la modificacion genetica de NDM-1 son muy resistentes a los medicamentos, aun pueden combatirse. La herramienta mas eficaz contra la transmision de las bacterias es aumentar las practicas de higiene en las instalaciones sanitarias. Como suele decirse, "el mejor ataque es una buena defensa". Las practicas recomendadas para mantener el entorno higienizado y seguro incluyen:
- Lavarse las manos frecuentemente de forma concreta: utilizar agua templada y jabon durante al menos 20 segundos, y no olvidar lavarse las unas
- Higienizar todo el equipo medico: los componentes metalicos deben esterilizarse entre intervenciones quirurgicas, y nunca deben reutilizarse los instrumentos desechables
- Limpiar en profundidad las superficies como mostradores, estructura de las camas, encimeras, ordenadores y telefonos del hospital
- Lavar la ropa de cama con lejia (o con otro producto desinfectante) y agua caliente a diario o cuando haya entrado en contacto con un paciente
- Limpiar frecuentemente los objetos donde se acumulan bacterias y que pasan mas desapercibidos como estetoscopios, medidores de tension, relojes y boligrafos.
Entrar en contacto con una superbacteria puede ocurrir estando de turismo de salud en otra ciudad, provincia u otro estado, pero tambien puede ocurrir durante una intervencion en un hospital de confianza si los implantes medicos o los profesionales que llevan a cabo la cirugia no estan adecuadamente higienizados.
Si reclama sus derechos y presiona para que su entorno este este seguro e higienizado, puede aumentar considerablemente las posibilidades de resistir a una infeccion. An interactive computer software program appears to be effective in helping patients manage their Type 2 diabetes using their mobile phones, according to a new study by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers. The percent of contiguous U.S. land area experiencing exceptional drought in July reached the highest levels in the history of the U.S. Drought Monitor, an official at the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said.
