Dr. Gordon T. Austin: Returning Vets Bring Remarkable Skill Sets, Opportunities

Coca-Cola Refreshments has announced its intention to hire 800 veterans. Dr. Gordon T. Austin, a Navy veteran applauds the efforts of Coca-Cola and calls upon other companies to recognize the skills that veterans have to offer.

NEW YORK, NY, May 23, 2012

Coca-Cola Refreshments has announced that it will open 800 jobs for veterans across the country. According to a press release published by The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch.com, this adds to the over 5,500 veterans that the company has already employed. Dr. Gordon T. Austin, a Navy veteran and award-winning dentist, applauds the efforts of Coca-Cola Refreshments to support United States veterans. Dr. Gordon T. Austin is encouraging other companies to recognize the skill sets that veterans offer, and the value that these skills hold.

Steve Cahillane, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola Refreshments, explained the company's commitment to supporting veterans in the previously cited press release: "Our military personnel have made incredible sacrifices to serve and protect their country and when they return home, they deserve support and recognition from companies like Coca-Cola. It's also in the best interest of companies to consider military vets as they offer a wide variety of skills, diversity of perspective, and ingrained leadership and drive."

Cahillane goes on to remark that the military offers a "strategic, qualified talent pipeline" for Coca-Cola. Through this pipeline, the company hires individuals with well-developed capabilities that contribute to the success that Coca-Cola has achieved. By staffing their nationwide offices and other locations with highly qualified employees, which veterans often are, the leaders of Coca-Cola understand that they are benefiting both veterans and their own business opportunities.

"I applaud Coca-Cola, a local business here in Georgia, for their program that offers 800 new jobs to veterans," commented Dr. (CAPT) Gordon T. Austin, USN (ret) and Past President of the Reserve Officers Association, Department of Georgia. "Georgia is home to multiple military bases. The substantial contributions of the National Guard to war efforts have resulted in the significant need of job opportunities for returning veterans."

The initiative that Coca-Cola Refreshments has taken in supporting America's veterans is not common among corporations. Dr. Gordon T. Austin hopes that other companies will see the success that Coca-Cola has achieved through its decision to both support veterans and put their skill sets to good use. The result, he hopes, is a higher number of veterans securing well paying jobs that allow them to transition to civilian life more smoothly.
