Dark energy and fate of the Universe

2012-07-22
(Press-News.org) Dark energy makes up about 70 percent of the current content of the Universe and thus holds the ultimate fate of our Universe. Several possible scenarios are possible depending on the properties of dark energy; one is that the Universe will end in a so-called big rip. This interesting topic was recently explored by five researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Northeastern University, and Peking University. Their work, entitled "Dark energy and fate of the Universe", was published in Sci China-Phys Mech Astron 2012, Vol. 55 No. 7.

For millennia, human beings have been pondering two ultimate questions: "Where do we come from?" and "Where are we going?" Over that time, these questions have spurred theological and philosophical debate. Thanks to the rapid development of modern cosmology in the past three decades, scientists nowadays have obtained some important clues to answer these questions. The standard "inflation + hot big bang" framework has been developed to explain the origin of the Universe. However, to forecast the destiny of the Universe, researchers have realized that the nature of dark energy is key.

In the absence of a consensus on what dark energy is, a phenomenological description of the equation-of-state parameter w—the ratio of pressure and density of dark energy—provides an important means for investigating dark energy dynamics. Properties of dark energy will decide the ultimate fate of the Universe. In particular, if w END

The Mortgage Alliance of Southwest Florida Answers Questions on Private Mortgage Insurance

2012-07-22
Historically low interest rates are tempting more and more homeowners to refinance their mortgages. People who took out home loans just a few years ago could save 2% or more in interest if they refinanced to today's rates. However, because of the recent drop in home values, many potential refinance candidates are finding themselves in a Catch 22. Even if they do not owe more than their homes are now worth, fewer people have enough equity in their homes to meet the 80% loan to value requirements. They can still refinance, but will have to pay private mortgage insurance, ...

Motorcycle Accident Fatality Rate Remains High

2012-07-22
This year's Rolling Thunder event, which recognized the contribution of American veterans, drew approximately 100,000 motorcyclists to Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. The presence of so many motorcycles on Maryland roads serves as a timely reminder that motorcycling is not as safe an activity as it could be. The discouraging news is that while traffic deaths overall are on the decline, deaths from motorcycle accidents remain steady. In the first nine months of last year, 3,580 people died in bike crashes, and 4,000 deaths for the year is projected. The Governors ...
