BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, August 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) Being able to administer effective first aid in the event of a life-threatening injury or sudden illness in the workplace can save lives. However, employers who train their employees to know what to do in the event of an incident in the workplace can also benefit financially.
According to Michael Walsh, GIO Risk Manager, first aid training can play a significant role in improving workplace safety and reducing workers compensation costs.
"First aid training is an important and reasonably inexpensive way to increase the safety awareness of employees", says Michael
"Employees who have been trained in first aid are often more safety conscious because they are more aware of injury causing situations. Employees may be more likely to recognise and correct identified hazards and make better choices which could lead to a reduction in the incidence of workplace injuries".
A proper and rapid response to non-life-threatening injuries can also directly improve the healing and recovery process. Injured workers who receive effective first aid following an injury may be able to return to work to quicker and with less treatment time and costs.
"Employers who provide first aid training for their employees may be able to benefit from reduced claims costs while also saving on the indirect costs associated with workplace injuries."
Employers also need to be aware of their legal obligations to provide first aid to an employee if they are injured in the workplace.
GIO has recently partnered with Life Saving Australia to provide customers with discounted rates for first aid training. Basic, senior, occupational and remote area first aid courses are available.
GIO is part of Australia's largest personal injury insurance group and has been providing workers compensation insurance for over 80 years. In NSW, Insurance is provided by GIO General Limited, as agent for the NSW WorkCover Scheme. In WA, ACT, TAS & NT, Workers Compensation Insurance is issued by GIO General Limited.
