CARY, NC, August 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) The US Olympic Diving Team got off to a wonderful start in the 2012 London Olympics, medaling in three of the first three events.
In between events on Friday, Johansen joined Matt West of PowerChalk in an online webinar from London. Johansen discussed the importance of motion analysis, and how the American Olympic team is deploying the motion analysis app, PowerChalk.
"Here at the Olympic games, PowerChalk is a huge part of our synchronized teams winning medals," said Johansen. "Every coach at every training session as a team, one of us is holding an iPad capturing that image and immediately looking at."
"They don't have the replays set up on the pool deck like we do at our pools back home so PowerChalk and the iPad has been our number one go to in every training session."
In a sport like diving, an incorrect positioning of the body for a split second can result in a deduction of points. When you add another diver to the mix for synchronization, motion analysis becomes a necessity.
"So what we're doing here in London is we're pulling up PowerChalk and we're capturing that image and immediately looking at it," said Johansen. "So the coach can look at the individual dive, coach the diver on the dive right away, then go to the iPad, assess what's going on synchronized, come to a consensus, and then bring that to the divers before they even climb back up the ladder for the next repetition."
As the official video analysis system provider for USA Diving, PowerChalk provides users with videos and tools to analyze diving mechanics. As the world's first and only web-based motion analysis system, the ChalkTalk Telestrator allows users to analyze, annotate and voice over their clips.
The mobile app used by Drew Johansen and crew can be downloaded for free at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/powerchalk-10-second-telestrator/id380054847?mt=8
