Dr. David Fett Weighs in on "Two-In-One" Surgical Procedures

Dr. David Fett reveals that a "new" procedure in the UK has its roots in U.S. ophthalmic plastic surgery.

2012-10-16
PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 16, 2012 (Press-News.org) According to The Telegraph, surgeons in the United Kingdom have pioneered a "two-in-one" procedure that takes the tissue collected from bags under the eyes and reinserts it into the cheeks, allowing cosmetic patients to undergo two separate procedures at once while recycling, in a sense, the tissue harvested from beneath the eyes. Dr. David Fett, a Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon who specializes in procedures regarding the eyelids, explains that this technique has been used in the United States for two decades. Regardless of which country created the procedure, and how long it has been offered to patients, Dr. Fett emphasizes the fact that it allows patients a higher degree of convenience, as it completes two individual surgeries with less invasive incisions.

"This is an article that pertains to English cosmetic surgeons using a 'new' technique to move fat from the lower eyelid to the cheeks. This is touted as a recycling or reusing of fat from the lower lids to the cheeks to build up flat cheeks, as would be done with cheek implants," explains Dr. David Fett. "However, this is not a new procedure. In ophthalmic plastic surgery, we have been doing this same operation for 20 years. We term this a fat translocation or transfer if it is moved with its blood supply from the lower lid to the cheek during a lower eyelid surgery. If that fat is removed it can also be injected into the cheek as a free fat injection."

The article reports that the "two-in-one" approach "has a lower risk of complications than conventional lower eyelid surgery--in which fat and wrinkled skin are removed from below the eye--because it involves less cutting." Additionally, the article notes that patients who may not be candidates for traditional procedures may be better suited to this particular technique.

Dr. Fett agrees that the patients who undergo the "two-in-one" operation can reap the benefits of plastic surgery even if they are not ideal candidates for more outdated procedures.

If blood, urine or breath tests show a blood alcohol level of .08 or above, a driver is presumed to have committed a crime While a correlation can be drawn between BAC and impairment, this parallel does not necessarily exist when considering marijuana ...

Kids and Crime: Connecticut Passes 'Raise the Age' Law

2012-10-16
A separate justice system for juveniles is not some sentimental Victorian notion that has no place in today's tough-minded criminal justice system. Cutting-edge research increasingly shows that the parts of the brain regulating risk taking and rational control are still not fully formed in teenagers. Holding juveniles to adult standards, then, is a very problematic policy. Fortunately, Connecticut has finally passed "Raise the Age" legislation to require young offenders under the age of 18 to have their cases heard in juvenile court and be segregated from adult ...
