Running Can Be Injury-Free With Preventative Measures, Urges OrthoAtlanta

OrthoAtlanta, an Atlanta-based surgical group, encourage runners to find running equipment to lessen the chances of foot and ankle related injuries. They also stress the need for stretching.

2012-12-05
NORCROSS, GA, December 05, 2012 (Press-News.org) Atlanta orthopaedic doctors at OrthoAtlanta encourage runners to invest in proper fitting running shoes to help prevent injuries to the feet, ankles and knees.

Running can be strenuous on the body, and even more hazardous if runners do not properly outfit themselves. Atlanta orthopaedic doctors with OrthoAtlanta urge that runners research running shoes, before purchasing them.

"No ordinary shoe will do," stated Dr. Michael Behr, Atlanta orthopaedic surgeon with OrthoAtlanta. "Runners need extra support and they should spend a great deal of time researching and trying on shoes before they ever hit the road."

Ill-fitting shoes can lead to bone and tendon damage; ankle strains and sprains; and damage to the knee joint. Over time, improper equipment can sidelined a runner.

Stretching is important too, Atlanta orthopaedics at OrthoAtlanta state. A runner should stretch out all the major muscle groups of the legs and hips to help keep joints from incurring damage, and muscles from tearing. Runners should develop a stretching program to hit all the key muscle groups and help strengthen joint alignment.

Hydration is necessary for runners, as it is with all sports. Atlanta orthopaedic doctors with OrthoAtlanta encourage runners to drink plenty of water, at least 8 ounces for every fifteen to twenty minutes of running, and then eight ounces for every pound lost during exercise. Dehydration depletes not only the body but the runner's performance as well.

Proactive prevention can help keep a runner on track, but when accidents and injuries occur, the team at OrthoAtlanta is available to treat any and all sports related traumas.
