London's Underground, the World's First Subterranean Transport System, Marks 150 Years Since it First Started

Special events planned to mark the landmark birthday of pioneering travel network.

Steam and heritage train outings, talks, tours, a large scale poster art exhibition and theatrical events in the disused Aldwych tube station are all part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. The celebrations begin with the two re-creations of that first journey on Sunday 13th and 20th January, followed by three talks by the authors of a book, 'How the Tube Shaped London', published by Penguin Books who are also presenting 12 short stories by well-known authors on each Tube line.

The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden hosts 'Poster Art 150' from Friday 15th February to Sunday 27th October 2013, an exhibition which celebrates the art featured on the London Underground. There will be special behind the scenes events at the museum's Depot in Acton - including the restoration programme beind an original steam train - when it opens for two weekends in April and October.

Further initiatives includes a campaign which will reveal 150 people whose personal stories will help to demonstrate the vibrant history of the Tube,, and special commissions by Art on the Underground by famous contemporary artists including a high profile British artist bringing artworks into every station on the Tube network and screenings of London Underground themed films.

The Royal Mail is marking the birthday with a special edition of London Underground stamps, released on Thursday 9th January, presenting a timeline of events from the first steam-driven Metropolitan Railway service in 1863 to Sir Norman Foster's modern Canary Wharf station, opened in 1999. Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the design duo behind the Olympic torch, have designed a collectable GBP2 coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary, and passengers will be able to buy a limited edition souvenir Oyster card featuring the new Underground 150th anniversary logo.
