Divorce can be a stressful and emotional process. When children are involved, it can be even more challenging. Decisions about child custody, parenting time and what is best for the child come into play. Several things prove to be important for parents to make the process as smooth as possible for their children. The following tips may help parents ease their children's adjustment.

Hide the fighting

Children often do not understand why fighting takes place and in some situations may blame themselves for being the source of their parents' anger or the cause of their divorce. When a couple is fighting about a particular part of divorce, or discussing the legal issues, it is better to do so in private. Children should also be reassured that the divorce is not their fault, and that both their parents still love them.

Keep communication open

When a child is involved, it is essential to keep the lines of communication open in order for each parent to have an understanding of what the child is going through and needs. School information and plans for dance recitals or music lessons all need to be openly communicated. Having both parents on the same page makes the adjustment for the children much easier.

Listen to the children

Divorce is a process that children may struggle with, and many will have strong emotions. Checking up on the children and asking them about how they are feeling provides insight into their struggles and can help parents determine when counseling may be necessary.

Stay involved

This goes hand in hand with keeping communication open, but each parent needs to remain involved in the children's life. Once again, this shows the children that they are not the reason for the marriage dissolving. It also ensures that the children have the support that they had throughout the marriage. Both parents should make an effort to attend the children's events when possible as well.

Get help

Sometimes, even when following all of these suggestions, children or parents still feel that they need extra help. Getting help to handle emotional strain can keep stress levels low. Reaching out for help is nothing to be ashamed of.

If you are considering divorce, contact a knowledgeable divorce attorney to discuss your situation and get help to make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your children.
