Recent Ohio Valley Collisions Increase Driving Safety Concerns

Authored by Wheeling auto accident lawyer Jeremy McGraw.

WHEELING, WV, March 11, 2013

Recent events here in the Ohio Valley have reinforced just how important it is to use care and caution on the highways. The Wheeling area was rocked this week by two separate motor vehicle collisions involving fatalities which occurred only about 24 hours apart. Early Sunday, a drunk driver slammed into the rear of a vehicle on McCutchen Road resulting in the death of one passenger and critically injuring another. The next day another collision occurred on I-70 Westbound near The Highlands between a car and a semi-tractor trailer. Both passengers in the car died as a result of the collision. The tremendous toll that these incidents will have on area families is difficult to imagine, and we all carry heavy hearts into the Holiday Season when these types of things happen.

Unfortunately, these collisions are in addition to the numerous other collisions which occur every day in the valley. Just last week a wreck occurred outside of our offices on National Road. Many of the daily wrecks occur on and around Interstate 70. It sometimes seems that many of us in the Ohio Valley have become a little numb to the dangers of interstate driving because so many of us use I-70 and I-470 each day, but Interstate driving brings with it increased risk because of heavy traffic, the speeds involved, and the sheer size of many of the commercial vehicles on the road. The operation of commercial trucks is heavily regulated in an attempt to cut down the great potential for danger when trucks weighing up to 80,000 lbs barrel down the highway. Not too long ago our Senior Partner, Jim Bordas, blogged about the importance of these regulations and some of the experiences that he has faced in his nearly 40 years of practicing law.

Semi-tractor trailers are not the only danger on the road way. More often than not, it appears that most motor vehicle collisions can be avoided by simply paying attention, being alert to our surroundings and avoiding aggressive driving tactics. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides a lot of helpful information and tips to help make our trips safer including, but not limited to, the appropriate use of child safety seats. Keeping a close eye on weather conditions is also important. Weather.com, in addition to general forecasts, provides specific weather forecasts tailored to Interstate travel. As many of us, myself included, take our families out onto the highway for Holiday travel, it is important to keep safety as our top priority.

One of the most difficult things about the practice of law is sitting down with individuals who have been seriously injured or have lost loved ones as a result of motor vehicle collisions. Our goal has always been to provide these families with reassurance that their cases will be handled with care and compassion by a Christian firm that is dedicated to our community. We have extensive experience and success in cases involving drunk drivers, semi-tractor trailers, and wrongful death.
