Divorce often takes a heavy emotional toll on many families. One of the spouses may be caught by surprise, and try to convince the other that they can work out their differences. In some situations, this allows the couple to resolve the problems that they are having, and they go on to have long-lasting and successful marriages.

However, in most cases, the changes are only temporary. The underlying issues that led to the problems in the relationship are not addressed, leaving both spouses unsure of what to do next. A couple in this situation may decide that a divorce is the best way to move forward.

In a divorce, there are many items that will need to be addressed by the parties, including child custody matters, as well as property division. Many couples may turn to divorce mediation in an effort to resolve these differences. In mediation, a mediator works with the spouses to help them find common ground. Spouses can try to work out custody and property division agreements with one another, rather than having the court make a ruling that neither side may like.

The mediator does not represent either side during the process, but rather works with each spouse to help them focus on the issues that need to be addressed. Each side is allowed to consult an attorney during this process, which can help the spouse understand the consequences of the agreements that he or she may be making.

Couples that use the mediation process can remove much of the anger and fighting that often makes many divorces highly contentious. It also helps control costs, and can be less time-consuming than those divorces that go through the court system.

Additionally, one of the main benefits for couples that use divorce mediation is that the agreements they make have a better chance of being honored by both sides. Because each spouse spent significant time working on the agreements, there is more understanding of each side's wants and needs. This helps prevent children from being in the middle, and allows both parents to create healthy relationships with one another as they continue to raise the child.
