LOS ANGELES, CA, May 08, 2013 (Press-News.org) The Los Angeles Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA-LA) will present a panel of officials from law enforcement and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) at the ISSA-LA Fifth Annual Information Security Summit, The Growing Cyber Threat: Protect Your Business, to be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Hilton Universal City Hotel in Los Angeles. The event advances ISSA-LA's core belief that 'It takes the village to secure the village.' SM
"The balance between privacy and law enforcement is a concern for everyone who uses the Internet," said ISSA-LA President Stan Stahl, PhD. "How are a free people to balance our right to privacy with our need to allow law enforcement to collect information that might enable us to more effectively protect our national security and our free market economy? This question of balance is one of the critical questions our distinguished panel will examine."
The law enforcement panel will include four speakers. Marc Beaart has served with the Los Angeles County district attorney's office for fifteen years and is currently the assistant head deputy of the high tech crime division. John (Jack) Furay is a Special Agent with the United States Secret Service and presently serves on their Electronic Crimes Task. Jason Smolanoff is a Vice President in Stroz Friedberg's Business Intelligence and Investigations practice based in Los Angeles where he is responsible for managing the firm's for Fortune 500 companies, law firms, and defense contractors. Speaking from the privacy perspective will be Hanni Fakhoury, a Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation ("EFF") in San Francisco, where he focuses on privacy and free speech litigation and advocacy. Hanni has also has written several op-ed pieces in the New York Times and Wired.
Keynote speakers at the Summit include former U.S. Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt, ISSA International President Ira Winkler, Rafal Los, Principal Strategist of HP Strategic Security Services, and Aaron Turner, critical infrastructure security expert and IANS Faculty.
The ISSA-LA Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed for participation and interaction among business executives, senior business managers, and their trusted advisors; technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information.
Registration is open to anyone, but is particularly recommended for information security practitioners; IT professionals; business and nonprofit executives; professionals in the fields of law, accounting, insurance, and banking; law enforcement professionals fighting cybercrime; and faculty and students in college and university cybersecurity programs.
The Information Security Summit is part of ISSA-LA's community outreach program. The goal of the program is to help the community stay safe from cybercrime by enabling the necessary collaboration between business, nonprofit and community leaders, technical IT professionals, and the information security community.
