NEWPORT BEACH, CA, January 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) They're barely discernable at first, misty figures steadily making their way toward the shore. To locals in this scenic beach town, they're known simply as "Women of the Mist - a group of intrepid women from all walks of life who have embraced the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) in a big way.
"We love coming down to the beach very early in the morning, and sometimes it's foggy," said Alyssa, a 27-year old advertising executive who began SUP boarding six months ago. "It's an incredible experience to be paddling along just taking in the beauty of the shoreline and the quiet of the morning."
Other Women of the Mist members include dentists, car salespersons, fitness instructor, stay-mostly-at-home moms and grocery store clerks.
"You really wouldn't think we'd have much in common," said Karen, a 38-year old flight attendant who joins the group when she's in town twice a month. "For me, it's just an amazing workout. Between the paddling, and continual balancing to stay upright, you can almost feel the calories burning and your body toning up."
According to fitness experts, Stand Up Paddleboarding burns an impressive 500 and 700 calories per hour - without the drudgery of going to a gym and climbing on a machine. In fact, unlike other water sports that are predominantly dominated by men, women seem to find themselves very much at home atop a 12-foot, 25-pound SUP.
"I love my Stand Up Paddleboard mornings with our group," said Stacey, the senior member of Women in the Mist at 67. "First of all, my doctor can't give me any grief because it's totally low impact, and the camaraderie we share makes the two hours just speed by."
While many women (and men for that matter) rent their SUPs, all seven of the Mist Members already own their own SUP boards, which can run a hefty $3,000 or more. According to Stacy, however, there are bargains to be had if you know where to look on line, such as a website known to enthusiasts as SmoothsUp.com
"There are several very good sites out there, but I would recommend taking a look at
http://www.smoothsup.com," she said. "We were able to save well over $2,000 at the SmoothsUp website, and still get a fully outfitted SUP package, including a board with great graphics, matching carbon paddle, safety leash and a number of other items for just $780 total, including free shipping."
So, the next time you're at the beach and you notice ghost-like figures approaching, they are no doubt Women of the Mist Stand Up Paddleboard members enjoying a pleasant paddle.

Breaking the Bed Bug Cycle with New York Bed Bugs
2011-01-09
The increasing rise in population of the bed bugs in New York has baffled scientists profoundly. The alarming statistics of bed bug infestations reveals how little is known about these clever yet incredibly annoying little pests, and how much it is we need to know about them.
Bed bugs have been given names like The Bug That Ate New York City and The Modern Terrorist for the right reasons. Due to the fact that bed bugs do not transmit any form of disease, the government has not been keen on prioritizing bed bug studies on their agenda. In a city like New York, we obviously ...
