LONDON, ENGLAND, September 25, 2010 (Press-News.org) The rare Mini-Dinky E-Type Jaguar in non-metallic red has become the 50,000th item to be entered into ToyPedia, Toy Collector's wiki-based online encyclopedia of collectable toys and models.
The other known variant of the model - metallic red - was the 49,999th entry, missing out on the honour by one, as ToyPedia alphabetises a model's different variants. Each individual model has its own page within the catalogue, with images and details of its different variants.
The Jaguar, part of Dinky's short-lived, Hong Kong-made range of small-scale models from the late sixties, was entered into the database on September 20th, 2010 by Toy Collector member Baskingshark with the photo being contributed by Vectis Auctions (see here for the ToyPedia entries). Launched in 2009, ToyPedia more than doubled the size of its database in the last six months and is now the largest toy catalogue on the internet - it expects to continuously double every six months to reach its target to catalogue every toy ever produced, in every variant. The Toy Collector team believe that 100 million items have been produced which will qualify for entry and, of course, for as long as toy production continues that number will continue to grow.
ToyPedia operates as a wiki, contributed to by the whole Toy Collector Community; collectors from all around the world. Everybody from individual collectors to specialist auction houses to manufacturers and dealers can participate. As such, ToyPedia differs from a paper-based reference source in several ways:
1. It will have entries for very unusual or rare toys that would not be covered elsewhere.
2. As entries are being constantly updated, they'll become more comprehensive over time.
3. It will be continually updated far faster than a paper-based reference source.
4. Users can create their own reference guides from it, focusing on whatever items interest them.
More than 100 manufacturers, toy auctioneers and retailers are already onboard with the project, including Bonhams, Christies, Corgi, Herpa, Jada Toys, Minichamps and Vectis.
