No Leash Needed Welcomes All Breeds to Obedience Training

Rising concern about certain breeds of dogs has led to many aggressive campaigns against them. No Leash Needed offers day care, training and boarding resources for pet owners.

NEW YORK, NY, May 08, 2012

Since 1997, an active ban on owning or harboring a pit bull or pit bull mix has existed in Prince George's County, Maryland. Many consider the penalty, which is punishable to up to six months in prison and a $1,000 fine, an unnecessary act of breed discrimination. Nationwide, organizations, like No Leash Needed and the SPCA discourage such injustices. However, in a recent report by MSNBC, the Maryland Court of Appeals rules that pit bulls are an "inherently dangerous" breed.

The ruling states that pet owners, or landlord that rent to them, are fully liable for any damages caused by any mix of the pit bull breed. Official decisions such as this are subject to much debate to many. One common belief is that a dog acts in accordance to the way it was raised. Others, who have share horror stories of dealing with vicious pit bulls, believe the behavior is part of the breed's nature.

Cheryl Bernard Smith, an active member of the SPCA, acts against breed discrimination and comments, "We believe that an animal's behavior should be the determining factor in whether or not the animal is considered dangerous." Many pet owners have found pit bulls to be just as loving as any other breed, and are trainable if necessary. Programs offered at the St. Louis based facility, No Leash Needed are designed to work with all breeds, pit bull or otherwise.

"We see many 'bully breeds' from Pit Bulls to Boxers to Bulldogs, and most of them are both human and dog friendly," says Shannon Mayfield, co-owner of No Leash Needed. It does not matter if a pet owner is facing a small obedience issue or struggling with an aggressive dog, Mayfield's staff is prepared to achieve desired results. The company works through innovative methods, such as socialization, to target the problems associated with behaviorally challenged dogs.

The SPCA grows even more concerned with the recent Maryland ruling, believing it will only deter further pit bull adoptions. Due to the negative public opinion associated with pit breeds, many of these dogs face death since people are unwilling to take them in. Organizations like Mayfield's help diminish the stigma attached with "bully breeds", such as pit bulls. The change is part of an overall effort to increase pet adoptions.
