Dementia Expert to Introduce Montessori-Based Treatment Program in Fennville

New patient-centered approach helps Alzheimer's patients and their families effectively cope with cognitive challenges

2012-08-09
FENNVILLE, MI, August 09, 2012 (Press-News.org) Fennville's Golden Orchards is the first LifeHOUSE Management Services facility in the United States to introduce Montessori-based dementia programming. The public is invited to attend two events featuring noted expert and author, Dr. Cameron Camp, on August 9: Open house at LifeHOUSE-Golden Orchards, 2-6 p.m., and book signing at Fenn Valley Winery, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The Montessori name is best known as an educational approach developed by Maria Montessori and used at an estimated 20,000 elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Dr. Cameron Camp, Ph.D., Director of Research and Development with the Center for Applied Research in Dementia, recognized the potential that Montessori-based methods could provide to individuals coping with dementia.

Camp's innovative approach focuses on the unique strengths and interests of each person and makes use of guided repetition, task breakdown, and progression from simple to complex tasks. His program has gained momentum throughout Europe, and is now gaining attention in the United States.

Studies have shown that Montessori-based treatments result in significantly more constructive engagement, less passive engagement, and more apparent enjoyment of activities, when compared to more conventional dementia interventions.

"We want to help people remain as independent as possible, and we want to be sure people are treated with the respect that they deserve," says Daniel Charpentier, Vice President of Operations for LifeHOUSE. "Montessori Dementia treatment helps us accomplish these goals in an area of rehabilitation where many struggle to retain hope."

LifeHOUSE Health Services focuses on bringing new innovations and personalized wellness solutions to residents in the twenty-four assisted living and skilled nursing facilities it operates throughout Michigan, Illinois, and California. Learn more at http://www.fennvilleassistedliving.com.

Dr. Cameron Camp, Ph.D. is the director of Research and Development at the Center for Applied Research in Dementia. He has been Principal Investigator on numerous NIH-funded projects and has conducted research on interventions for persons with dementia and memory disorders for over 25 years. Dr. Camp recently served as President of Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) of the American Psychological Association. Learn more at http://www.cen4ard.com
