KNOXVILLE, TN, October 10, 2010 (Press-News.org) Many of today's college students lack the mental toughness and fortitude that are necessary to deal with economic turbulence. Today's youth must learn how to be mentally tough if they are to survive a turbulent economic future. In reality, many parents have crippled their children by solving their problems for them and shielding them from making difficult decisions. As millions of Americans battle unemployment, a new book by Dr. Daryl Green and Mr. William Bailey offer advice to parents in creating mental toughness for their college students in order to increase employability.
In this financial crisis, college grads need to be mentally tough. It is easy to see how individuals can be discouraged with the current economic recession. According to the U.S. Labor department, only 47.6% of people age 16 to 24 had jobs in August. This is the lowest percentage since the government began tracking this statistic in 1948. Yet, college grads must have the determination to overcome any crisis in life.
In Job Strategies for the 21st Century, the authors share a number of compelling observations. In fact, Green and Bailey argue that most college students are not mentally tough. Green explains, "This reality can be seen in viewing 'helicopter parents' who micromanage their children's affairs from infancy to adulthood. The results are kids who can't cope under pressure. It is a no-brainer for college students to stay in college as long as possible to that it can be paid by parents."
Bailey adds landing a job today is an extreme uphill challenge, considering the large number of graduating students combined with the rising number of the unemployed. He adds: "We know and understand the importance for students to plan for their career goals. Daryl and I believe most college students neglect the need for career planning."
That's why they wrote their new book. Job Strategies for the 21st Century is a valuable resource for frustrated college students, their parents, educators, and anyone struggling to resolve employment issues. It is an insightful book that touches on a variety of intriguing topics, including market trends for the 21st century, corporate expectations for workers and job strategies. The guide's goal, among other things, is to help readers:
- Learn how to navigate uncertainty and better compete for jobs
- Gain better confidence in their ability to grow while under job pressures
- Discover the insight to go beyond their limitations
Through Job Strategies for the 21st Century, Green and Bailey have presented their in-the-trenches experience and innovative concepts in a format that readers will find very interesting and easy to read. The authors share their insights in a realistic, optimistic manner. In the book, they write: "Today's job market demands that students develop their own personal strategy for employment. From our experience acting as student advocates in academic and community settings, we frequently find ourselves encouraging students to plan for their career aspirations. This book provides some less traditional steps for effectively positioning current college students to better compete in future job markets."
Green and Bailey's engaging book comes at a time when 15 million Americans are unemployed and more U.S. companies are trending toward hiring temporary workers, intensifying the competition for jobs. College graduates, in particular, are having a tougher time securing suitable employment because they often lack sufficient work experience. However, Job Strategies for the 21st Century offers a very timely solution.
Job Strategies for the 21st Century is available online at Amazon.com and other book retailers. You can also view the book trailer on YouTube.com at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_LKEMrIweA. For more information about the book or the authors, please contact Donna Gilliard at 865-216-9209.

Through their research and practical application, they have found a huge disconnect between what organizations want in potential employees and what today's graduates are providing. Their expertise provides a solid foundation for their new book, Job Strategies for the 21st Century: How to Assist Today's College Students during Economic Turbulence.
Both Green and Bailey are available for media interviews on the issues of job strategies during economic turbulence. College graduates, in particular, are having a tougher time securing suitable employment because they often lack sufficient work experience.
