Four retailers agree to voluntarily recall the Nap Nanny

The injury or death of a loved one is always tragic -- and when the loved one is an infant, the grief can be unimaginable. Parents do their best to care for their children, providing safe environments in which they can flourish. Unfortunately, the products made for infants and children do not always meet safety standards. In some terrible situations, they can lead to serious injuries and fatalities.

Such is the case with a product called the "Nap Nanny," which is made by a company called Baby Matters. The product was made to act as a portable recliner for babies. The Nap Nanny included a harness, in which parents could secure their infants to the recliner. The product retailed for approximately $130, and was sold at stores across the country and online.

Since its introduction in 2009, three models have been manufactured:
-Generation One
-Generation Two
-Chill

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a voluntary recall of all three models. It estimates that approximately 155,000 units have been sold since the product's introduction in 2009.

Why did the CPSC issue a recall of the Nap Nanny?

Problems with the Nap Nanny initially arose in 2010, when Baby Matters agreed to provide a coupon to consumers who had purchased the Generation One model. The coupon allowed consumers to buy the newer version of the product. At that time, the CPSC had received reports of one infant death as a result of the defective product. In addition, it had been told of 22 incidents in which infants fell out of the recliner or were found hanging from it.

Despite the redesigned product and additional warnings and instructions, the CPSC continued to receive reports of problems with the recliner. The CPSC reports that it has now received 70 complaints of problems with the product. Tragically, five of those complaints indicated the product had led to the deathof an infant.

While the CPSC informed Baby Matters of the issues, it has not agreed to participate in the recall. Consequently, the CPSC has filed suit against the company.

While Baby Matters has not agreed to participate in the recall, four retailers that sold the product have issued a voluntarily recall, including:
-Amazon.com
-Buy Buy Baby
-Diapers.com
-Toys R Us/Babies R Us

The retailers are offering refunds or store credit to consumers who have purchased one of the three models of the Nap Nanny.
