ASHG names Amanda Perl as Chief Executive Officer

ROCKVILLE, MD - The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) is excited to announce the selection of Amanda Perl as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer. Perl has served in numerous association leadership positions with deep experience in strategic planning, membership, publishing, communications, and society operations, as well as meetings and conferences.

“ASHG is delighted to welcome Amanda, a seasoned association executive, to the team,” said ASHG President Bruce D. Gelb, MD. “We are confident she is well positioned to lead the Association as it continues to grow, succeed, and elevate the human genetics and genomics community. She is a dynamic leader who will bring the perfect blend of leadership and association experience to not only build upon our momentum, but to propel us even further forward.”

Perl comes to ASHG from the American Thyroid Association (ATA) where she served as Executive Director. Her focus was on educational program development, governance training, aligning committees and workgroups to strategic plan objectives and strengthening relationships with strategic and international partners. Prior to her position at ATA, Perl was the Chief Global Member Engagement Officer at the Endocrine Society, where she led the creation of the Society’s first Special Interest Groups to increase member engagement and value.

Before joining the Endocrine Society, Perl spent nine years with the Institute of Food Technologists, where she launched the Certified Food Scientist certification program and led fundraising initiatives for the IFT Foundation.

“It is an honor to serve as CEO for an organization so well-regarded for its long history of dedicated members and talented staff,” Perl said. “I look forward to working to continue to help others recognize the benefits of human genetics and genomics research for people everywhere and play a role in this amazing community’s achievements moving forward.”

Perl expects to spend a great deal of time initially listening to and learning from ASHG’s various stakeholders, but she is also eager to work with volunteers and staff to shape the vision and deliver tangible results.

ASHG publishes two world-renowned journals and a quarterly online news magazine, conducts the premier global human genetics meeting as well as other educational and scientific meetings, issues guidelines for the field, promotes careers in genetics and genomics, and advocates for appropriate funding for scientific research and public policies that support human genetics research.

Perl received a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies: Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics and Government and in Public Communication from American University in Washington, DC.

Perl will officially begin her role as chief executive officer at the Society on May 14.
