Breast Augmentation is a Worldwide Phenomenon

Breast augmentation is sometimes attributed to a patriarchal or media-centric American society, but the truth is that this procedure is a worldwide phenomenon, and that its roots go far deeper than a media-saturated 21st-century America.

2012-08-18
NEW YORK, NY, August 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) Breast augmentation is when breast implants are used to increase the size of a woman's breasts. This is sometimes called a "boob job." Breast augmentation is sometimes attributed to a patriarchal or media-centric American society, but the truth is that this procedure is a worldwide phenomenon, and that its roots go far deeper than a media-saturated 21st-century America.

Worldwide Phenomenon

The US is neither the country with the most breast augmentations (that's China) nor the country with the highest per-capita rate (that's Greece, where one procedure is performed for every 376 women every year). Breast augmentation is the second most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the world, after liposuction. Breast augmentation procedures in the US account for about 14% of the world's total, according to statistics by the International Society of Plastic Surgeons (ISPS).

Not a Recent Phenomenon

One thing people say when trying to claim that breast augmentation is the product of our contemporary culture is that the procedure is a recent phenomenon. They will point to the growth in breast augmentation procedures since the late 1980s as proof of this argument. However, the argument does not hold up.

First, breast augmentation procedures have grown in popularity since the 1980s not because the desire is new, but because the availability of a relatively safe and effective treatment option became not only widely available due to declining cost and increased financing options, but also became more socially acceptable because of the presence of several high-profile celebrities who admitted to and even celebrated the procedure.

And it is true that there was a time in the 1940s when women were seeking out plastic surgeons primarily for breast reduction, something that was changed by a marked change in preference toward a busty ideal for women.

However, long before that, women sought breast augmentation overwhelmingly.

Early Surgical Attempts

Plastic surgeons have been trying to enlarge the breasts since before they were called plastic surgeons. Among the first experiments was the use of paraffin wax to enlarge the breasts. This created granulomas, infection, pain, deformation, and, ultimately, the need for surgical correction. Many other substances were tried, from glass balls to transplanted fat to sponges, but none of them gave good, stable, long-term results. In fact, most often the results were deformation and injury.

Pre-Surgical Enlargement

Before surgical breast enlargement became a possibility, women sought larger breasts through other means, such as vacuum pumps, some of which hooked up to the faucet and created suction through aspiration. There were also patent medications, creams, and salves.

Using lingerie to increase the size of the breasts was common before this, including in the Victorian period, when corsets were used to minimize the waists and accentuate the breast by pushing them up and outward. In the West, this tradition goes back to the Renaissance, and even includes many bare-breasted fashions in the upper classes.

In India during the first century, women wore what was known as a kanchuka, a small, vestlike garment that pushed the breasts together and forward, to show off the breasts. Even before this, ancient Minoans used something that looked like a combination of a vest and corset to display breasts.

The Evolution of Breasts

And, of course, the enlargement of human breasts began long before we wore clothes at all. At some point in human evolution, women began to develop permanently enlarged breasts (as opposed to breasts that might become engorged by milk production), unlike all our primate relatives, who tend to have much smaller breasts. It, along with the work of many evolutionary psychologists, suggests that human males are evolutionarily conditioned to be attracted to large, round breasts.

This, of course, explains why breast augmentation is the second most popular plastic surgery procedure in the US and the world.

Medical Malpractice Damage Caps

2012-08-18
It has been said that if there are not caps on the amount of money medical malpractice victims and their families can collect, then everybody will suffer - namely the healthcare professional and the hospital who were negligent. As a result, many states have passed medical malpractice damage caps. The goal of the caps is to lower premiums and medical malpractice insurance for the doctor under the guise that the patients will not have to pay an increased amount to their doctor. This is all tied up in something politicians have been arguing about called tort reform. Tort ...

How Medical Malpractice Causes Birth Injuries

2012-08-18
Childbirth is a time where everyone marvels at a medical miracle. Unfortunately, bringing a child into the world is a complicated process where a number of things can go wrong. Although parents may worry about deliveries that involve complications, no parent wants to imagine that their child won't have a chance at a normal life due to a doctor's error. Nevertheless, medical malpractice can (and does) occur during the birthing process. Malpractice is defined as negligence on the part of a doctor, nurse or other medical professional involved in the birth; essentially the ...

Study Suggests More Malpractice Claims Occurring with Outpatient Treatments

2012-08-18
When people think about medical malpractice claims, they commonly worry about surgical errors where tools are left inside the patient, wrong site procedures, or medical charts being lost or misinterpreted. Despite the specter of harmful mistakes within the hospital setting (i.e. inpatient procedures), a surprising number of medical malpractice claims arise from outpatient treatment. A recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that nearly half of the 10,739 malpractice claims paid in 2009 stemmed from outpatient treatments. Major injuries ...

The Different Definitions of "Disability"

2012-08-18
A recent case in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals -- Holmstrom v. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company -- could possibly change the landscape of disability claims brought under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Disputes involving insurance claims that fall under the purview of ERISA are decided by federal courts. Illnesses of the type developed by Holmstrom (hers was a painful nerve condition that caused severe pain in her right arm and hand) are often difficult for insurance adjusters to quantify since they show no outward signs of medical defect. Disability ...

Pennsylvania Truck Accident Settlement May Be Largest in State History

2012-08-18
The extent of harm that drivers and passengers in other vehicles can suffer in truck accidents is due largely to the difference in mass between cars and semis. When the impact leads to catastrophic injuries or a wrongful death, the amount of damages can escalate quickly based on medical bills or a lifetime of lost income. The Pennsylvania Record recently reported on a fatal truck accident case that settled for over $26.1 million, a figure that would make it one of the largest personal injury litigation settlements in state history. The case involved a semi owned by Great ...

California Assembly Passes Bill to Tackle Health Insurance Fraud

2012-08-18
In an effort to address the growing problem of health insurance fraud around the state, the California Assembly recently passed bill AB 2138, which will increase the amount given to agencies responsible for investigating bad faith disability claims and other types of insurance fraud. The additional funding would allow district attorneys' offices around the state to investigate and prosecute insurance fraud ...

New State Law in Illinois Ushers in Synthetic Drug Crackdown

2012-08-18
Several high profiles news stories in the past few months have upped the ante in a growing national campaign to combat synthetic marijuana and other "designer drugs." While a handful of cases have featured graphic and sensational behavior, against a national backdrop, problems associated with synthetic drug use have remained a relatively minor blip on the radar screen. Yet, media attention on an issue that it's easy for politicians to be "tough on" can quickly focus the public dialogue. In Illinois, that focus has played out in the form of a new synthetic ...
