PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 10, 2012 (Press-News.org) EIN News has announced that Lockheed Martin, an international security and aerospace organization, has donated $500,000 to the University of Central Florida (UCF) to encourage the education of teachers interested in instructing classes within the STEM fields. Lisa Kreisler, a math teacher in Pennsylvania, appreciates the generosity of the company and looks forward to the improvements in teacher education that this and similar donations will have on the future.
According to the article, the donation was made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Lockheed Martin/University of Central Florida Academy for Mathematics and Science. Located at the University of Central Florida, this organization was created to educate teachers who are interested in the mathematics and science fields. To date, the company has donated over $2 million to the Academy. This money has benefitted the students enrolled in the organization and improved the education that graduates of the program are able to provide to their students.
UCF President John C. Hitt comments: "By helping the College of Education create a strong cast of accomplished teachers in mathematics and science, Lockheed Martin has helped make Central Florida a center of excellence for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines. Together, UCF and Lockheed Martin are developing the highly-skilled workers that our community and state need to thrive in today's competitive global marketplace."
"I applaud the donation made by Lockheed Martin to support teacher education in Florida," says Lisa Kreisler. "As a current math educator, I know that we need strong, dedicated teachers in our classrooms. Many college students are looking for careers in high paying industries, causing them to overlook the opportunities that may await them in the educational sector. Lockheed Martin is a very visible, well-known corporation. The fact that it is donating its resources to the education of tomorrow's teachers shines a light on a very worthwhile career. Due to this donation making the news, individuals who may not have considered a future as an educator may now explore the options that work within the educational setting has to offer. We need to recruit more young people into the educational field and show them how to create careers as educators. With the brightest students opting to teach the next generation, we can boost the quality of instruction that is provided at all levels of the educational field."
Kreisler encourages any organization looking for a philanthropic cause to consider investing in the education of the next generation. By doing so, they can directly impact the quality of instruction that students receive.
