Baseball Injuries Can Be Strike Three For Players, OrthoAtlanta Urge Players to Consider A Pre-Game Stretch

Atlanta-based surgical group, OrthoAtlanta, encourages baseball players to gear up appropriately and stretch to prevent sports related injuries.

2012-12-04
NORCROSS, GA, December 04, 2012 (Press-News.org) OrthoAtlanta, an Atlanta based orthopaedic group, urges baseball players to adopt healthier measures before, during and after their games.

Atlanta orthopaedic surgeons at OrthoAtlanta state that baseball players require just as much warm up and cool down preparations as any other sport. Pitchers should be cautious with their elbows and shoulders, as pitching can put undue strain on the muscles and joints of the arms. Pitchers should carefully warm up their arms to prevent injury and damage.

Other players should be just as cautious, believe Atlanta orthopaedic doctors at OrthoAtlanta. While pitchers don't do a much running, other players have the added strain of running. Fielders should warm up all major muscle groups of the body, not just the arms.

"Baseball allows players moments of non-activity, and if muscles are not properly stretched, these moments can cool muscles down quickly, causing injury," said Dr. Michael Behr, Atlanta orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoAtlanta. "No matter what position they play, players should stretch all muscle groups, just in case."

Hydration is important for baseball players too. Atlanta orthopaedic doctors at OrthoAtlanta urge players to hydrate themselves before, during and after the game. Since most baseball is played during the hotter times of the year, dehydration can happen quickly, so players need to stay hydrated.

Atlanta orthopaedics at OrthoAtlanta encourage players to drink at least 8 ounces of water for every fifteen to twenty minutes of exercise. A player who loses just 2% of their body weight during activities will notice about a 25% decrease in their overall performance. Keeping hydrate can keep an athlete at peak performance and prevent injuries.

Prevention is essential to the overall health of the body, and the Atlanta orthopaedic doctors at the OrthoAtlanta encourage players to maintain a strict stretching and hydration program. Injuries can be prevent, but when they occur, the team at OrthoAtlanta are ready to help players put the zip back in their game.
