The trusted electronic cigarette review website EcigaretteReviewed.com has hit back against false and misleading claims surrounding electronic cigarettes. News reports from around the world have spurred on the uncertainty surrounding the new nicotine-vaporizing devices, but a glut of scientific research has shown that there is very little to worry about with regards to their safety. It's been claimed that the presence of nitrosamines and diethylene glycol in e-cigarettes renders them a potential health hazard, but the website rallies against these claims, ultimately placing them in the context of a traditional tobacco cigarette.Pharmaceutical companies, anti-smoking organizations and Big Tobacco are keen to jump on any potential dangers of e-cigarettes, but the more research is conducted the thinner these arguments become. In essence, e-cigarettes contain vaporized nicotine, some propylene glycol and additional FDA-approved food flavorings. This represents a monumental decrease in the amount of chemicals consumed by a smoker, with a tobacco cigarette containing well in excess of 5,000 chemicals.
Despite these obvious benefits, the dangers of e-cigarettes are well-publicized thanks to anti e-cigarette organizations. Amongst others, Pfizer (who produce smoking cessation product Chantix) has been criticized for funding groups who want to keep e-cigarettes off the market. The FDA has also come under fire for failing to provide full details in a press release claiming that carcinogens and harmful chemicals were found in e cigarettes.
EcigaretteReviewed explain how although diethylene glycol was found in one cartridge tested by the FDA, 18 were tested altogether, and the quantity detected was less than a tenth of that found in a single aspirin. Likewise, the furor surrounding the detection of nitrosamines was also called into question. Research has shown that tobacco cigarettes can contain up to 1,400 times more, but facts like this are seldom revealed in sensationalist reports fuelled by anti e-cigarette organizations.
The work of Boston University researcher Michael Siegel is central to the article, and in particular a review of 26 studies which boldly concludes that they are "undoubtedly safer than tobacco cigarettes." Research cited in the article also indicates that the risks of inhaling nicotine in relatively pure form are much lower than those associated with inhaling nicotine plus the thousands of chemicals and more than 60 known carcinogens in tobacco smoke.
A spokesperson for EcigaretteReviewed said, "We're just giving people the facts they need to make an informed decision. Promoting uncertainty and over-emphasizing the potential risks of e-cigarettes gives smokers an excuse to continue in their harmful habit. More research does need to be conducted, but the results of initial studies are extremely promising."
