LateRooms.com - Check Out the Feast of San Gennaro in Naples

The Feast of San Gennaro in Naples is a centuries-old tradition that involves a 'blood miracle' being performed.

2010-08-12
NAPLES, ITALY, August 12, 2010 (Press-News.org) Anyone looking to get their teeth into some authentic Italian culture while staying in Naples hotels should stay in the city during the Feast of San Gennaro.

The event, which takes place on September 19th every year, is a celebration of the 'blood miracle' of San Gennaro.

Tourists in town for the day will see a hive of activity around Naples Cathedral, with plenty of market stalls selling sweets and kitsch curiosities, according to Porta Napoli.

The online resource revealed that a procession of holy statues marches through the streets, as well as a centuries-old ritual involving a silver bust of the saint in question.

It noted that the church service which takes place on the day can get very busy, with the sight of the blood miracle meaning that no disaster is expected to happen during the year.

"Patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro is celebrated with singing, crying and praying as his statue is paraded through the streets. The festival ends with the 'miracle' of his blood, kept in a vessel in the cathedral, being turned to liquid," explained the travel listings website What's on When.

According to legend, San Gennaro was the bishop of the Italian town of Benevento and was beheaded for being a Christian, with a woman saving an ampoule of his blood that was eventually brought to Naples.

For more information on this event visit the Porta Napoli website.

Residents may fear retribution if they speak out about substandard living conditions or may not want to burden their loved ones with such concerns. In some cases, nursing home staff may make it difficult for residents ...
