COSTA MESA, CA, August 12, 2010 (Press-News.org) Dr Pepper Snapple Group's new manufacturing and distribution facility in the City of Victorville is now operational. Located at the Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA), the 850,000 square-foot beverage manufacturing and distribution hub is the largest construction/manufacturing project completed in San Bernardino County, the largest county in California and one of the largest in the country. The facility is bringing more than 200 new jobs to the region.
"The opening of this landmark facility is a testament to the pro-business climate we have worked to create in the City of Victorville," said Keith Metzler, City of Victorville, director of economic development. "This project represents a positive development amidst the backdrop of a challenging Southern California economy and will pave the way for additional high-caliber corporations to follow DPS's lead and locate their operations in Victorville."
The facility serves as the company's Western manufacturing and distribution hub, bringing up to 40 million cases of product to California and parts of the Southwest. Expected to qualify for LEED certification, the facility houses a 550,000 square-foot beverage distribution center, five filling lines, office space and state-of-the-art beverage processing and support systems. It manufactures soft drink and juice brands such as Snapple, A&W Root Beer, Schweppes, Squirt, RC Cola, Mott's, 7UP and Hawaiian Punch.
"The City of Victorville has created an environment in which we are well-positioned to thrive in the Western Region," said Larry Young, president and CEO of DPS. "The delivery of this state-of-the-art facility will allow us to offer a high level of customer service and grow our business."
The completion of this project follows the execution of a minimum nine-year lease by Plastipak Packaging, Inc., a global leader in product packaging, to occupy a 260,000 square-foot LEED-certified industrial building at SCLA. The company will supply the plastic containers for DPS's manufacturing facility as well as other major consumer product manufacturers. Plastipak's existing customers include Procter & Gamble, Pepsi, Kraft Foods, Kroger and Tropicana.
"The relocation and expansion of DPS and Plastipak have laid the foundation for a vibrant industry cluster for the food and beverage industry in Victorville," said Metzler. "We have successfully delivered the infrastructure to serve the industry's leading suppliers, manufacturers and distributors."
Victorville has also completed construction of a $30 million wastewater treatment plant capable of safely treating and discharging the DPS facility's wastewater. The City is also delivering approximately $6 million in new roads and infrastructure for the DPS facility. The City is also delivering approximately $6 million in new roads and infrastructure for the DPS facility.

Unique Umbrellas Open Up Great Business Opportunity
2010-08-12
It takes a certain kind of creative mind to look at an umbrella and see a canvas for a new kind of art. And an even more creative mind to use the elements to reveal that art. But Viviane Jaeger and Emma-Jayne Parkes did just that when they linked the gap between science and design and created Squidarellas. Dry, Squidarellas are striking black and white umbrellas. But as rain falls on them, the white areas change to reveal the colorful patterns beneath.
The two co-founders and directors of SquidLondon have been impressing some of the top names in the fashion industry ...

Searching for Signs of Nursing Home Abuse or Neglect
2010-08-12
We trust nursing homes and assisted living facilities to care for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities: elderly individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves. Unfortunately, this trust is sometimes misplaced, and the consequences can be tragic.
Abuse and neglect can be particularly worrisome because if often goes unreported. Residents may fear retribution if they speak out about substandard living conditions or may not want to burden their loved ones with such concerns. In some cases, nursing home staff may make it difficult for residents ...
Delays in Immigration Reform and Administrative Alternatives
2010-08-12
The long wait for the Federal Government to address Immigration Reform may be coming to a close, as the debate over the need for reform for border enforcement and the manner in which to deal with the 15 million or so "undocumented" foreign nationals already in the US has reached a boiling point. Although multiple proposals for immigration reform, from single-issue legislation to "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" (CIR) have been introduced in Congress over the past several years, each proposal has met several roadblocks in Congress resulting in no change. With the enactment ...
Texas Enacts Family Protections During Military Parents' Absences
2010-08-12
Military parents have plenty to be concerned about without having to worry about the care of their children during military assignment. The Texas legislature recognized the problems inherent with the need to protect the children of military parents while balancing those needs with the rights of military parents, and as such passed a new state law (Senate Bill 279) effective September 1, 2009 dealing directly with this circumstance of military deployment.
In Texas, divorced parents or unmarried parents of a child or children are typically named as joint managing conservators ...
New Technologies Provide Convenience Along With Distractions and Risk
2010-08-12
In the digital era, multitasking has become a way of life. While reading the news, we chat with colleagues through instant message. While having coffee with friends, we check text messages. We divide our attention between multiple activities, trusting that each activity only demands a fraction of our available capacity.
Most of the time, this is not a serious problem. We have adapted to a way of life that anticipates and accepts constant interruptions. Unfortunately though, some activities are not well-suited to this approach. Most notably, perhaps, is the activity of ...
