SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, May 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) Online Casino AU has published the results of the Australian Gambling Survey conducted by the University of Sydney and Southern Cross University which reveals fascinating statistics about the online gambling in Australia.

The results of the online survey (which was available to everyone over the age of 18 who has wagered money online in Australia) include information on demographics, behaviour and technology.

Head of http://www.onlinecasino-au.com, Richard Smith commented; "We feel it's important to publish research on the relatively new phenomenon that is online gambling in Australia - we hope the findings will allow researchers to delve deeper into issues related to internet gambling".

According to the preliminary set of findings, 92% of all Australian individuals who gamble online are male. In fact, online gamblers are more likely to be male than land-based gamblers, a population of which only 67% are male.

It is most popular among males between the age of 35 to 49 (34.8%), with 50-to-64-year-olds following closely behind (34.4%). Online betting seemed to be the least popular with the 18-24 age groups. 65% of these individuals are employed full time and 16% of them make more than $150 000 per year.

The findings also reveal the reasons that many online gamblers choose to play online rather than in a land-based environment. 62% stated that they enjoy the convenience of not having to leave their homes and 54% stated that the 24-hour availability was a big draw for them. 35% enjoyed not having to deal with crowds while 33% stated that privacy and anonymity was a key point for online gambling. Only 2% stated that they played online due to land-based gambling being unavailable or illegal.

Along with these advantages, respondents were also required to name what they thought would be disadvantages to gambling online. The most popular disadvantage claimed that online gambling was 'too convenient', meaning that it is easier for players for spend more money. Players also do not enjoy the poor social environment and the lack of face-to-face interaction.

Smith concluded; "These findings are key to understanding the online gambling market in Australia. By examining these preliminary results, researchers will be able to conduct more in-depth studies about the nature of internet casinos and online betting. We look forward to reading the interesting and engaging studies that will result flourish as a result of these findings".

Research maps the city's heat

2012-05-14
Steel – the traditional industry for which the UK city of Sheffield is so well known – could help provide a green alternative for heating the city's homes and businesses, alongside other renewable energy sources. Experts from the University of Sheffield's Faculty of Engineering believe that the many steel plants located just outside the city centre could be connected to Sheffield's existing district heating network to provide an extra 20 MW of thermal energy, enough to heat around 2,000 homes. "It actually costs the steel plants to reduce the temperature of the flue ...

Imagine charging your phone as you walk, thanks to a paper-thin generator embedded in the sole of your shoe. This futuristic scenario is now a little closer to reality. Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have developed a way to generate power using harmless viruses that convert mechanical energy into electricity. The scientists tested their approach by creating a generator that produces enough current to operate a small liquid-crystal display. It works by tapping a finger on a postage stamp-sized electrode ...

Wasted milk is a real drain on our resources, study shows

2012-05-14
Milk poured down Britain's kitchen sinks each year creates a carbon footprint equivalent to thousands of car exhaust emissions, research shows. Scientists say the 360,000 tonnes of milk wasted in the UK each year creates greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 100,000 tonnes of CO2. The study by the University of Edinburgh says this is the same as is emitted by about 20,000 cars annually. The research identifies ways that consumers could also help curb greenhouse gas emissions – by reducing the amount of food they buy, serve and waste. They also suggest the food industry ...

Reducing post-traumatic stress after ICU

2012-05-14
Women are more likely to suffer post-traumatic stress than men after leaving an intensive care unit (ICU), finds a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care. However, psychological and physical 'follow-up' can reduce both this and post-ICU depression. Patients in the ICU often suffer post-traumatic stress, anxiety, or depression due, not only to the illness or trauma that put them there, but to the very nature of the ICU and life-saving treatment. As a result, follow-up schemes have been put in to place to help alleviate these psychological ...
