App development is a particularly seductive topic, with headline grabbing stories such as Facebook's $1 Billion purchase of Intagram and OMGPOP's takeover by Zynga for $200m tantalizing peoples' imagination. The reality for independent app developers is much more grim, with 59% of app developers not even breaking even on their apps, according to a recent survey by App Promo.
MAKE APP Magazine aims to tip the scales in favour of the independent developer. Despite the grim statistics, there are indie developers who are managing to produce successful apps and app companies. These developers often have no programming knowledge, however it is their marketing savvy that leads to their repeated App Store success. While these unsung heroes of app development are far from an Instagram, they often manage to generate income anywhere from a respectable passive income stream to multi-million dollar company valuations.
