Boothe Eye Care Encourages Professional Collaboration, Superior Patient Care

Smartphone technology has bridged the gap between many medical professionals, allowing them to communicate about patient cases even if they are not physically in the same location. Boothe Eye Care believes that technology is improving patent care.

2012-08-14
NEW YORK, NY, August 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) Diagnosing eye injuries or conditions in the emergency room can prove difficult if there is no ophthalmologist available. In fact, triaging many injuries can be challenging without the expertise of a specialist. Unfortunately, many emergency rooms do not have access to a wide range of such specialists. For this reason, smartphone technology is being used to bridge the gap between the emergency room and the specialists who are needed to successfully triage certain cases. Boothe Eye Care is encouraged by the great strides that technology is making and its ability to improve patient care. More importantly, the practice is excited about the increased collaboration between medical professionals that such technology is facilitating.

One of the ways in which smartphones have brought medical professionals closer is by allowing them to share patient information. As a result, they can collaborate on cases even if they are separated, geographically, by hundreds of miles. An article published by Reuters explains that some hospital emergency rooms are sending pictures of patient injuries to specialists in an effort to better triage and treat conditions. Additionally, they can send digital files, such as scans and other documents, to doctors who are assisting with the case.

"Using (an) iPhone to transmit images to colleagues as a help with patient triage in the ER is a new concept," comments Dr. Valerie Biousse, who works at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. "ER departments are working at improving acute patient care by developing ways to access specialty consultations such as ophthalmology."

Boothe Eye Care knows that collaboration is an important aspect of moving any industry forward--particularly when it concerns the implementation of new technology. Dr. William Boothe remarks: "The innovative way that technology is being used in the emergency room is fascinating. Smartphones really have the power to positively impact the healthcare industry, and I think that ER doctors are recognizing that. But the real power here lies in the ability of technology to bring healthcare professionals together. Collaboration, more than anything else, leads to medical success. These technological breakthroughs are providing for better patient care because they are providing a way in which professionals can work together to address the medical needs of their patients."
