Robert M. Pope, New London Professional, Celebrates Boost in Home Building, Emphasizes Safety Needs

As the American economy recovers, many experts anticipate that home building projects will be on the rise. Robert M. Pope, New London safety professional, weighs in on current trends in project growth.

2013-04-22
PHILADELPHIA, PA, April 22, 2013 (Press-News.org) Robert M. Pope New London safety professional, has explored his industry in many different capacities throughout the span of his career. As such, he explains that he has witnessed many ups and downs in the development of the building and engineering fields, but none have proven as widespread as the negative effects the recent recession had on the housing market. However, a recent article from CNN Money reveals that as the housing market enters recovery, home building projects and hiring seems to be on the rise. While the article indicates that this trend has allowed many building professionals to breathe a sigh of relief, Robert Pope believes that hiring should not be rushed into without properly addressing workplace safety requirements.

The article delves into the extent of the growth and states, "The better-than-expected February jobs report got a big lift from 48,000 new jobs in the building industry. Builders have added 151,000 jobs over the last five months, the sector's best hiring surge since the 2006 housing bubble...In January, [builders] filed for the greatest number of building permits since 2008." In addition, the article explains, "The jobs report also showed...building supply stores...added 4,300 workers in February, making it one of the hottest retail segments to add workers."

However, while Robert M. Pope, New London professional, finds the economic turnaround a cause worthy of celebrating, he believes that many builders may require extensive safety training, especially since so many previous skilled & experienced workers have left the field. In the article, Paul Emrath, economist with the National Association of Home Builders, shares a similar sentiment and reveals, "Our members are hiring so much that they're starting to get worried about finding enough labor out there. Most are talking about adding people... We are coming from a very, very low trough...So many workers left the field during the downturn that it's become more difficult to find skilled & experienced workers."

Leading his business, ACS Solutions, Robert M. Pope of New London, emphasizes the greater need for focusing on training to ensure that skilled workers can enter the workforce. "With an increase in Home Building comes an increase in labor, and more specifically unskilled labor. This means that the risks for injury are higher, especially as the 'OSHA Residential Construction Fall Protection: Extension of Temporary Enforcement Measures' have not, as yet, been extended beyond March 15, 2013. This means that fall exposures and injuries from falls will likely be on the rise in the home building industry," Robert M. Pope, New London safety professional, concludes.
