2013-04-23
A recent survey suggests that the recent difficult economic times may have had an effect on the spending habits of young Americans. Specifically, it has discouraged them from obtaining credit cards. According to the survey from Sallie Mae and Ipsos Public Affairs, 39 percent of undergraduates between the ages of 18 and 24 said that they owned a credit card in 2012. This marks a 10 percent decrease from two years earlier. Data from the Federal Reserve also found that young adults who have credit cards are not carrying as high of balances as their older counterparts ...

2013-04-23
Have you ever found yourself dozing off while you were behind the wheel? Have you wondered in that situation whether you should pull over to take a rest or grab a coffee and continue on your trip? A new study recently published in the British Medical Journal investigated the effectiveness of caffeine in preventing truck accidents among commercial motor vehicle drivers. The researchers examined data from over 1,000 truck drivers, about half of whom were involved in truck accidents between December 2008 and May 2011. Of the drivers interviewed, 43 percent used some ...

Warmer temps mean more motorcyclists on Colorado's scenic roads

2013-04-23
After such a long, harsh winter, the 2013 motorcycle season promises to be a busy one for Colorado motorcyclists. Unfortunately, more bikes on the road can mean more opportunities for motorcycle accidents. Thankfully, though, if both motorcyclists and motorists keep some basic safety tenets in mind, the roads will be safer for everyone. For motorcyclists The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reports that one in every five of the state's traffic fatalities annually is a motorcyclist. In 2010 alone, (the most recent year for which such data is available), ...

Study shows sponges most common item left inside body after surgery

2013-04-23
When you have a health condition that requires surgery, there are certain errors that the medical community and general public agree should never occur. These so-called never events, include surgical errors that are entirely preventable -- such as retained surgical objects. Unfortunately, a study conducted by USA Today revealed that surgical objects are left inside patients on thousands of occasions every year in the United States. While that figure may seem small in comparison to the 48 million operations performed in the U.S. every year, as every retained object could ...

Delayed Or Misdiagnosed Breast Cancer May Be More Common In Men

2013-04-23
Pink, usually thought of as a feminine color, has come to symbolize breast cancer awareness. Numerous awareness campaigns have involved pink ribbons to show support for women with the potentially deadly cancer. But breast cancer is not just a woman's disease. Although breast cancer occurs more often in women, men can also develop the disease. Because it is far less common in men, neither a man with the disease nor his doctor may realize that a suspicious lump or other symptom could be breast cancer. As with any cancer, a misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis can be fatal. Patients ...

NYC group bringing awareness to dangers of bicycle accidents

2013-04-23
As traffic fatalities are on the rise in New York City, an environmental advocacy organization is focusing on protecting a particularly vulnerable group of commuters -- bicyclists. The group, Time's Up!, is taking action to spread awareness about the frequent lack of criminal charges filed against motorists who cause fatal collisions with bicyclists. Recently, the group of volunteers rode around the city, stopping at locations in which a fatal bicycle accident had occurred. At each location, the group spray-painted the outline of a body on the cement, along with details ...

Statistics show increase in number of distracted drivers

2013-04-23
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently published the results of its 2011 National Occupant Protection Use Survey, an annual survey regarding the use of electronic devices by drivers. Unfortunately, even though safety advocates, government officials and legislators have spoken out about the dangers of distracted driving in recent years, NOPUS results indicate that the number of drivers observed texting or otherwise using electronic devices while behind the wheel has continued to rise. This sort of behavior poses a significant danger and is now a leading ...

Bringing your Ohio small business through a divorce

2013-04-23
Divorce, simply put, is stressful. There are emotional considerations, the welfare of your children, the financial strain of establishing two separate households and the day-to-day realities of not being a cohesive unit with your spouse anymore. With all those disparate issues competing for your time and energy, it is no wonder that many divorcing couples don't have the ability to focus intently on an extremely important part of their lives: their small business. Tips to protect your financial future after a divorce

2013-04-23
After a couple divorces, each spouse typically has to take on new responsibilities previously handled by his or her former significant other. Many married couples divide tasks between themselves, but must take charge of every important area of their life following a divorce. For instance, it is not uncommon for one spouse to keep track of the finances in a marriage. When the marriage ends, it is critical for each spouse to ensure they have a good understanding of where they stand financially and how to maintain control of their financial future.
