DULUTH, GA, April 26, 2013 (Press-News.org) It is estimated that nearly 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. This alone will cause over 8,000 deaths, which amounts to one person per hour, 24 hours per day. To raise awareness for oral cancer, April has been designated as the oral cancer awareness month. Dr. Tatiana Shifrin, dentist in Berkeley Lake, GA, hopes to continue to share important information on this deadly disease to further protect her patients.
"Today, oral cancer awareness in the American public is extremely low, which is not acceptable. While April is solely focused on oral cancer awareness, I hope we can continue to remain aware of this deadly disease even after April is over," said Dr. Tatiana Shifrin, Berkeley Lake, GA dentist.
Dentists are often the first line of defense against oral cancer, through the process of early discovery. While smoking and tobacco use are major risk factors in the development of oral cancer, the fastest growing group of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection with the HPV virus.
"It is not possible to stop this virus from spreading, but it is possible to save lives through professional involvement and public awareness. April's oral cancer awareness month gives us the opportunity to get involved and to give back to our communities in hopes to raise oral cancer awareness and the need for early detection to save lives. Together, we can make a difference in the world of oral cancers," said Dr. Shifrin, Duluth dentist.
Dr. Shifrin, Duluth emergency dentist, encourages each of her patients to visit Shifrin Dental this month to get screened for oral cancer and to better understand this disease for better preventive measures. Oral cancer screening is a routine part of a dental examination. Regular check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. There may be a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore that patients may not be aware of. Dr. Shifrin, Suwanee, GA dentist, will carefully examine the inside of a patient's mouth and tongue for any changes or sores.
For definitive oral cancer diagnosis, patients are encouraged to visit Dr. Tatiana Shifrin, dentist in Suwanee, GA, of Shifrin Dental, who will examine a patient's mouth and evaluate his or her medical history to formulate an initial diagnostic impression and treatment plan. Oral cancer is diagnosed through a confirmed malignant biopsy and a clinical evaluation to identify the stage and grade of cancer. Continual check-ups to your dentist are important in maintaining oral health and preventing cancer.
With oral cancer month in April, Dr. Tatiana Shifrin, Berkeley Lake emergency dentist, works to better inform patients of oral cancer and early diagnosis. For more information patients can visit Shifrin Dental's website at http://www.shifrindental.com, or by calling Dr. Shifrin at (770) 232-5255.

Studies: shorter shifts for interns fail to decrease medical errors
2013-04-26
When a medical student graduates and begins his or her internship, long hours are part of the deal. Until recent years, these interns had to work up to 36 hours straight. Because of the long hours, regulators decided to reduce their shifts to 16 hours in 2011. Regulators reasoned that the interns were tired and overworked and were making medical errors as a result.
Although it flies in the face of reason, the medical regulators were mistaken, according to two recent studies published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The studies found that the shorter shifts did not lead to ...
Technology could help teens stay safe while driving
2013-04-26
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, injuries from car crashes are by far the leading cause of death among people in the U.S. between the ages of 13 and 19. In 2010, the last year for which statistics are available, a total of 3,115 teenagers died in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. The IIHS identifies driver immaturity and inexperience as the primary reasons why the car crash death rate among teenagers is so high. Immaturity leads to risky behaviors such as speeding, while inexperience makes it difficult for young drivers to identify potential hazards ...
Options for paying for long-term and nursing home care in Connecticut
2013-04-26
Typically, people needing long-term medical care have three payment options; they must pay for care through private funds, long-term care insurance or Medicaid. Medicaid is a state run insurance program partially funded by the federal government.
Connecticut's Medicaid program, also known as Title 19, covers low-income and low-asset residents who need long-term or nursing home care. Traditional medical insurance and Medicare generally do not pay for long-term care. While long-term care insurance may be an option, such insurance and its affordability depend upon the health, ...
