SEATTLE, WA, April 27, 2013
Fox have already bought the film rights to The Dark Game by journalist Brett Forrester - the real life story of his investigations into match fixing and football corruption. The match fixing scandals in the football world have also inspired a more unusual project, with independent developers Game Changer Games currently working on creating the first video game where the player takes on the role of a match fixer.Match fixing stories don't seem to be going away any time soon, with the explosion of interest in the subject started by Europol's investigations into a reported 680 fixed games announced earlier this year leading to almost daily tales of football corruption from around the world.
The subject of match fixing has been covered in top selling books, like Declan Hill's The Fix, and is due to be the subject of another non-fiction book by investigative journalist Brett Forrester in the near future. His book, The Dark Game, is also set to be made into a movie, with Fox having already optioned it.
The multimedia exploration of football corruption isn't set to stop at print and film, however, with independent developers Game Changer Games already en route to releasing a video game where players can bribe, blackmail and gamble their way to the top of football's dark side.
Game Changer - The Football Match Fixing Game is set to be released on mobile and tablet devices via the Apple App Store and Google Play store in early 2014, subject to the developers getting the funding they need via popular crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. It offers a new spin on football management games by letting players influence the way things happen in leagues around the world by executing different match fixing techniques. Players can also come together to form "crime syndicates" using the game's social features.
With a fun, cartoon art style and plenty of humor, Game Changer - The Football Match Fixing Game is designed to provide an unsettling, entertaining contrast with the dark subject at the heart of it - the corruption of football for profit. Subject to meeting funding targets, the initial release of the game will also be localized and translated into French, Italian, German and Spanish, with plans for further localizations for other European, Asian and South American markets and in the future.
