The New Jersey Turnpike is notorious for motor vehicle crashes. With the high number of cars and trucks on the roads each day, car crashes are a common occurrence in the state. A single vehicle accident can cause hours-long traffic delays on the turnpike during rush hour. When multiple vehicles are involved, personal injuries and wrongful deaths often result from the ensuing mess that is created.

In mid-April, four trucks collided on the turnpike, killing one person and injuring another. A 10-car accident in late March held up traffic for hours, and lines of car up to two miles long waited to get past the scene of the car crash. Any number of issues can create single car crashes but there are just a few that typically cause multi-vehicle accidents.

Common causes of multi-car accidents
-Weather: Weather conditions such as fog or heavy rain can reduce visibility and drivers may not notice that cars that have slowed down in front of them in the driving lane. Snowy roads and patches of ice can create slippery conditions that are not noticed until it is too late; one car spinning out of control can cause multiple cars to crash.

-Exterior distractions: Drivers typically notice various things as they drive and some drivers are known to rubberneck -- stare or gape at something of interest while turning one's head. Tourists taking in the sights and commuters checking out accidents on the road shoulders are commonly accused of rubbernecking.

-Other car accidents: Under normal driving conditions, when a minor car accident occurs, the involved driver can pull off to the side of the road without too much trouble. However, in traffic jams or busy highways -- such as the New Jersey Turnpike -- a minor car collision can quickly escalate into a multiple vehicle pile-up.

-Inattentive drivers: Cellphone use while driving is so dangerous that most states ban or limit their use by drivers. Looking at a map, carrying on an in-depth conversation with a passenger or tending to children or pets in the backseat are all dangerous distractions. Even the act of eating a snack or reaching for something on the floor of the vehicle can take a driver's eyes off the road long enough to cause an accident.

-Dangerous drivers: Speeding or erratic driving, especially during rush hour or on heavily trafficked roads, can easy create a dangerous situation for other motorists. Cutting in too closely in front of a large truck or another vehicle may cause that driver to take evasive action which can start a chain reaction. Sleepy drivers are also dangerous behind the wheel as their reaction times are drastically reduced.

Whether someone is involved in a single or multiple vehicle accident, his or her injuries can be just as serious. If you or someone you love suffers an injury in an accident, seek the advice of an experienced personal injury lawyer. An attorney knowledgeable about negligent driving cases may be able to help you get the medical and wage loss compensation you deserve. Losses for pain and suffering may also be available.
