PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) Joshua Pastore, a student and entrepreneur, is offering his thoughts on a new article detailing how wedding planners are creating a niche for themselves in a crowded industry. Wedding planning has become a popular field for entrepreneurs, since beginning a business only requires expertise, business cards, a website, and connections. It is also a popular field because weddings are currently bringing in $51B annually, which presents plenty of potential for these professionals to earn money.
Lately, couples in the United States are willing to fork over more funds to make sure that their nuptials are unforgettable. Market research firm The Wedding Report explains that since 2009, costs for wedding planners have jumped 47 percent from an average of $995 per wedding to $1,466 in 2012. As the demand grows, so does the number of professionals, though. The Association of Bridal Consultants estimates that the number of wedding planners working in the United States is roughly 20,000. Many of these individuals have particular areas of expertise, from destination weddings to gay and lesbian nuptials.
Joshua Pastore comments on this trend stating, "With any business, but particularly when there is stiff competition, an entrepreneur must differentiate him or herself from the rest of the crowd. This individual must find a demand and meet that need. It is not enough to offer the best services, you also have to provide a client with something that no one else is currently offering."
Helena Parker, who owns Divine Events by Helena in San Diego, has built her business around brides who need help planning, but do not have thousands to spend on services. Many clients hire her to deal with vendors in the final two weeks leading up to the wedding, and she typically manages the action on the actual day. She is different from a full-service planner though, because she does not come in to help with flowers, food, music, and other details that are ironed out in the early stages of planning.
Parker has day-of rates from $850, with increased charges depending on how much work is required. In general, full-service planners have fees of upwards of $3,500.
Bernadette Coveney Smith has established herself as a same-sex wedding expert. She frequently helps couples from countries where same-sex marriage is forbidden book "elopement packages" in either New York or Massachusetts, and her fee includes assistance with getting a marriage license. In addition to her planning abilities, Smith is also equipped to deal with the challenges that gay and lesbian couples must regularly deal with, such as familial acceptance.
Joshua Pastore supports these individuals' entrepreneurial efforts stating, "These professionals have truly figured out how to carve out a niche for themselves in this field."
